What are you calling water proof tape? If your looking to seal coax connectors
outdoors, you should be asking for weather proofing tape.

I would recomend that you use a multi step process. If you ever would be
looking to re-open the connection, place 2 layers of a good electrical tape,
like Scotch 33 or 66 over the connector first. Then apply two layers of a
streatch tape called fusion tape. This tape will stick to itself when stretched
about a 1/3 of its original length. It comes with a backing like a plastic fabrick
between the layers.

If your in a harsh environment, you can then place another two layers of the
electrical tape over the fusion tape. This multi layered weather proofing will
keep your connection dry in the worst weather. Have used this process for
many years in the cellular field.

The electrical tape you can obtain from Home Depot, Lowes and stores like
that. The fusion tape will be harder to find. You might have to look around
at some of the electrical supply houses. I know Tessco and Hutton carry it.
Problem is they like you to have an account or pay with a credit card.

If you can't locate the fusion tape, you could use what they call weather seal.
This comes in various widths and in a roll. It is like duct seal with a white
plastic separator between layers. Kind of wrap and mold this putty type
material around your connectors after you put down a couple of layers of
plastic electriacal tape. This weather seal will stick to anything it comes in
contact with after a while. You will never get it off a connector if you don't
put the electrical tape on first. Then put a couple of layers of electrical tape
over the weather seal to finish the process.

One point to remember is that when you finish up with the last wrap of
electrical tape, don't pull it to break it off from the roll. Cut it with a knife
and don't put it under tension. Over time, this electrical tape will creap and
start to unwrap over time if you pull it to break it off. Just the properties of the tape.

I use good quality electrical tape and have very good luck. One connection has been in the weather for 10 years with no problems. Just make sure you try to keep everything clean while you're sealing it up. If necessary wipe it down with a non oily solvent so that the glue on the tape can really stick.

Good Luck.

3M has a few different types as well. There's also cold-shrink, I think it's called. Plain ole silicones work as a sealant too.

Wal-Mart carries the rubber type stretch self fusing tape,in the plumbing sect.

Works great for coax sealing, just be sure to competely cover it with some black electrical tape,as it will crack after exposure to the sun/elements

Waterproof Connectors

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is what i use to seal all antenna connectors. Plus good for lots of other things.

BUTYL TAPE

1. INTRODUCTION
Butyl tape is a self-adhesive tape made by butyl compound.
Aluminum Galleg, PE Film, Non-Woven, etc. is laminated on the upper side and silicon film is on the bottom side to easier release.

2.PROPERTIES

Adhesive: Butyl rubber has excellent adhesion to most materials, such as: all of metal, wood, glass, zinc, concrete, etc.

Heat & Cold resistance: Because of heat-resistance and cold-resistance, Butyl rubber can be used under
any temperature conditions.

Excellent Dielectric insulation
Anti-corrosion: Butyl rubber prevents the surface to corrode from moisture and steam.
Easy application for high technical use.
Excellent resistance against UV rays: Laminated aluminum prevents to loose his characteristics when exposed to direct sunlight.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Specification

1.5t x 54mm x 20M(per roll)

1.5t x 100mm x 20M(per roll)
(Available to change the specification according to order-quantity)

Test Results more details

4.PRODUCT RANGE

GT: To laminate Aluminum Gallge on the upper side
PT: To laminate PE Film on the upper side.
NT: To laminate Non-woven on the upper side.
ST: Self-adhesive tape on the both side.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5.USES

Exposed parts and underground pipe, joint and tank for anti-corrosion
All kind of parts such as water pipe, ventilation for waterproofing.
General flashing applications for dielectric insulation
ST product can be used to pipe laying for sealing to roll the tape and adhesive for overlap parts in waterproofing membrane.

6.Application

Seal and repair guttering, down pipes and corrugated sheets
Seal and repair carport and lean to roofing joints to main wall.

Hi TB and all,

To answer your question in a nut shell, black vinyl electrical tape is adequate for most environments and Rat Shack does sell it. Save yourself the trouble if one isn't in town, your local hardware store is right up the street.

For harsh environments where salt water and petroleum products may be encountered Tommy Tape may be found at just about any marine equipment and supplies dealer. Unless you're sailing sailing over the bounding main, go with the plain old electrical tape, it's worked for me for over 30 years and some of that old stuff is still up there.

Its called self-amalgamating tape.

I guess you guys use the brand name (eg: Fusion), but the name you'll find it under is self-amalgamating.

SAP tape is what you want. As stated above Self Amalgamating Tape is what you want. It is also known as the Butyl Tape. I am a gas fitter and we use it up here to protect the tracer wire. 100% watertight. If you were around here you could grab some from me. I have lots. I keep a roll in the car. It is great if you pop a hose. You could put the SAP around it and get yourself to your mechanic with NO problems.
