In Ohio....

That has been going on here in Southern Ohio recently.

They aren't sure "where" the data is being stolen from, but, I'd bet something like that was used!!!!

I can see how the skimmer reads the stripe from your card, but unless the bad guys have been inside the ATM itself, I fail to see how they are getting the associated PIN.

You are right in that skimmer won't get pin # but
maybe they only run up cards that don't require a pin hence why only one person so far publicly has reported lost money.
Maybe scam works for some credit cards but not Debit cards.
Course many people's Debit accounts have small balances so they cherry-pick the larger ones!

Most of those skimming devices likely have a pinhole digital video camera aimed somewhere out of the left of the skimmer so they can watch you type in your PIN. 30 seconds of low-res video doesn't take up much space at all, and with 4GB of solid-state memory taking up less than the size of an ink pen it'd be very easy to steal hundreds of PINs and card swipes per day per skimmer.

The logic to control the swiper is already present, it'd be trivial to link a camera to it and have it record for 30 seconds each time a card is swiped through the skimmer...

Most atm/check cards sport a VISA logo and VISA numbering system and can be used for online purchases the same as a credit card. In fact, when using the check card in retail stores, the bank suggests pressing the credit button to avoid having your pin number skimmed as occurred a a local drug store in northern New Castle county.
