Hi! As you know I have the Yaesu VR 120D scanner. On its preset memory, there are 10 weather channels, labelled "WX - 01", "WX - 02", etc. They operate around the frequency, 162.XXX MHz.
As I live in the UK, will these be of any use as I haven't heard anything on them yet.

Thanks!

Knoxville :)

In the United States, the National Weather Service uses these frequencies for general forecast and severe weather information which is available to the public:

162.4
162.425
162.45
162.475
162.5
162.525
162.55

In most of the populated areas of the U.S., you can hear weather information on one (or more) of these frequencies.

Here is a website that explains this service:

http://www.weather.gov/nwr

While you may not hear weather forecasts on these frequencies in the UK, you may hear other services using these frequencies.

They come in handy for signal testing... I did some hill-topping the other day in the SoCal area and got all but one of them, which was kind of cool.

I don't know what scanner you have, but most newer scanners have the WX frequencies already programmed in the Service Search. Also look to see if you have SAME/FIPS capabilities. If so, you can set up your scanner to only alert if a watch/warning isfor your specific county (or even part of a county).

So if I go to a high point in England/Midlands, I might be able to pick something up?
