JOHNSTOWN, Colo -- Three teen girls were injured Thursday afternoon when their sport utility vehicle crashed into a train.

Two of the passengers were not wearing their seat belts and were ejected through the windshield, the Colorado State Patrol said. The driver was airlifted to North Colorado Medical Center.

Video from the scene shows a long stretch of skid marks leading up to the crossing area, showing that the driver was trying to stop the SUV but it was too late, 7NEWS reported. The white 1990 Ford Bronco rammed into the Union Pacific freight train and then bounced back onto the same side of the road, stopping at a crossing sign. The front end of the Bronco was badly damaged.

The crash occurred just after 3 p.m. on County Road 17 and County Road 52 in Weld County, near Johnstown.

The area has a railroad crossing sign but no guards or crossing arms.

The road is closed at this time but since it's in a pretty rural area, traffic is not impacted. Cars are being diverted onto other county roads.

The teenage driver of a car that crashed into a freight train in Weld County on Thursday has been identified as LaPorte resident Nicole Bracht, 16.

Bracht was seriously injured when her Ford Bronco crashed into a Union Pacific train around 3:10 p.m., according to a news release from the Colorado State Patrol. She was airlifted to North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley.

Kathleen Holguin, 17, of Milliken, also sustained serious injuries. She was ejected through the windshield of the Bronco and was taken by ambulance to the North Colorado Medical Center.

Chelsea Brown, 16, of Johnston was moderately injured, according to the news release.

Bracht and Brown were wearing seat belts. Holguin was not, according to the news release.

Bracht, was traveling westbound on Weld County Road 52 when she crashed into the left side of the southbound train’s lead locomotive.

She has been charged with one count of careless driving causing injury and one count of a minor driver operating a motor vehicle with an unauthorized passenger.

Sixteen-year-old drivers are permitted to have only one passenger under the age of 21.
