i have a service selector on my Radio Shack Pro-83. and one of the services says "MRN". what does this mean?

i was going down I-285 South, in Atlanta GA, and very briefly i picked up a bit of radio chatter, but could not ID it as anything special. it was on the MRN Service. i noticed it has a very small range of frequencies. Starts at 156.025 and ends at 162.025.

also, what service band is CB Radio on? my selections are WX, POL/Fire/EMS, VHF "Air", MRN and HAM.

Marine? as in boats im assuming. well, where i was, there are no major bodies of water, and definately none that require radio comms.

26-27 MHz ehhh..... just outside of the HAM range. uuugh.

There are a few places where the FCC has allowed land mobile licenses in the VHF marine
band and there are also a lot of people illegally using marine radios in vehicles and for other
purposes.

Yeah there are definitely no marine channels that should be in use around I-285 or any where near there, more like 300 miles away down I-95 South. On a side note...not to jack the thread, but have you been able to fully monitor DeKalb County TRS? I have had problems programing in the fleet map on my Pro 94 since this is a /\/\otorola IIi system. Instead, I am getting partial conversations. I know this question would do better in the Georgia forum, but I figured since you were monitoring the metro area you might know.

The Pro-83 does a good job on Marine, we get a surprising amount of traffic from the Arkansas River Navigation System. There's a daily update on conditions along the entire Mississippi River that's put out by the Corps of Engineers.

MRN = Marine Band. There are 88 channels assigned between the frequency range you listed for maritine operations. 156.8000 is the international calling and distress channel (ch 16) and it will usually have the most activity. Bridge tenders operate on [size=-1]156.6500 which is channel (13). So if you're anywhere near a draw bridge monitor that and if a boat is about to come through you can hear them call and would let you know the bridge is about to go up. The last I knew there wasn't any real bodies of water in Atlanta. My guess is a couple of people illegally using them over land.

CB is from 26.9650 mHz AM/SSB to 27.4050 mHz AM/SSB. The scanner you have doesn't go down that low. It starts at 29.0000 mHz and up. You'd need something like a PRO-95 to be able to scan into the Class D Citizens Band.

FYI: VHF Air is the US Civilian Aviation band. from 108 mHz to 136 mHz AM. HAM is from 29.0000 to 30.0000 and 144.000 to 148.0000 and 420.0000 to 450.0000 FM.

Listening to Detroit CG they will tell yu to take your idle traffic to a proper working chennel if you traffic is not distress on CH 16
" the FCC has designated Ch 19 for recreactional calling"

The Pro 83 DOES cover CB!
