This has no point really, but how much hang time do you like?

Depends if it's settable per channel or global.

Shorter for repeaters that TX CTCSS/CDCSS on the tail since they add their own hang time. Longer for repeaters that don't and simplex. Longer for local channels and shorter for more distant stations. Longer for PS, MilAir, and Federal, and shorter for business, RR and air.

It all depends on YOUR priority of a channel and how much you can stand to miss.

Well... if I'm on the kicking team, about 10 seconds. Receiving team, about 2 seconds is good.

I prefer 2 sec's. Then when you hear an officer calling for assistance and you need to pause.. the channel changes and you didnt see what channel it was on :x That happens to me every once in a while :D

i have ours set for about 5 seconds. The tail doesn't seem to bother anyone, certainly not me. It helps the ones who simply can't grasp the click-pause-talk thing not front end clip as much.

I hate long squelch tails. Makes it a pain when I'm trying to cross-band into the machine since I have to wait on the tail to drop before I can key up. With a 5 second tail most QSOs can go on forever with nobody letting the repeater tail drop.
For me, the shorter the squelch tail, the better.

Lowell PD just got a brand new MTR2000 460.025 DPL 025, and it is set for no hang time, I love it. It's really awesome with DCS, the only thing is the units have to wait a second before they talk, but other than that it rules. Anyone else got anyone using a no hang time repeater by em? If so how do ya like it?

A 5-second squelch tail? Why wants to listen to open squelch for 5 seconds? Maybe you mean a 5 second hang time or a 5 second repeater tail.

Remember - the shorter the hang time the shorter the repeater life. (All that turn on/turn off isn't healthy for the hardware.)

OMG! We AGREE on something else???

Nearly all my repeaters run 7 second tails.

As Al said, the extra TX time is nothing compared to the TX cycling. Think about it - when is the most likely time for a light bulb to blow. Yep - when you are turning it on. That's the critical time for electronics.
