Do to rebanding I want to upgrade my firmware in my PSR-400 from 1.04 to the latest and greatest 1.08.

While I wait for my programming cable to arrive I was reading the docs for the differnt upgrades.

In the firmwareDownload.doc for version 1.08 it states

3) If you are upgrading both the CPU and the DSP code, we recommend upgrading
the CPU code first.

What is the DSP code?

Why would I want to upgrade it?

Where can I find this code?

Thanks in advance

DSP is the Digital Sound Processor. It's the second processor chip in some digital scanners that does all the digital signal decoding which includes trunking info, unit IDs, TGRPs, etc. plus the most important decoding of the digital voice signals that you listen to. Of course, the 400 does not handle digital voice coded systems. Improvements help in voice intelligibility in the scanners that have digital voice capability, the way the unit handles trunking info and other functions. Of course the CPU does all the scanner control, display, keypad and general operation of the radio. They cross each other's boundaries but that's the basic gist of their function.

As far as I can tell, and there are a lot more knowledgeable 400 users than I, there is no separate DSP in the 400 or it's combined into the main CPU. There is only a CPU firmware update for this radio. Latest is Ver. 1.08, no DSP.

Actually it is Digital Signal Processor. It is in all digital scanners.

Oops, you're right. Grabbed the name of the acronym I was most used to, those that are used in audio units like amps and receivers where most their work is in high speed audio processing. I believe though that most of the analog only trunkers use the CPU for that function since it doesn't require the high speed digital to audio processing. Then a CPU firmware update can also have any fixes or improvements to the DSP operation as well.

Digital voice decoding capable scanners like the PSR500/600 & PRO 106/197 and Uniden digitals have a second "CPU" designated for all the digital signal decode functions including the voice data which would require it's own processor because of this high speed, compute intensive requirement. That's why they usually have an additional separate update called the DSP upgrade.

Sorry for my mis-speak.
