• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What is a Source File vs. a Data File?

In programming 7180s and the like, there is an option to save and load source files as opposed to regular .dat files.

What is a source file used for? What can it do for me?

Source files are used to exchange channel information between radio models. If you were upgrading from a TK-7160, you could create a source file in KPG-99 with your channel information. You could open that source file in KPG-89 and import as a zone. .dat files store all configuration information for a specific radio model.

The data files (.dat) are specific to a model series/software package and the source files are more universal, but not entirely. They can save a lot of time when programming the same setup to different series radios.

From the KPG-89D help file:
Source file is similar to the database and is used for the Merge function. A Source file can store a maximum of 20 Systems in the Zone Merge window.

Zone Merge allows you to store the Zone data in the source file and merge the Zone information.
The source data facilitates to make the same or similar configuration to another transceivers and saves your configuration works.
Furthermore, you can copy the Zone information from the stored source file to the data file.

That is the problem, I read the help file but I could not really understand what they were saying.

I would love to have a way to transfer large blocks of data around the various programs, you know it drives us all nuts having to type it all over and over.

I guess I need to try to figure it out some more. Does zone merge always use a source file or is it also somehow internal to the program? I don't know how to use it at all.

Sometimes it seems info is lost in translation.

I'm very confused just like you are or were, did you ever find out how to do this? I just need to move a zone from my tk-2180 to my tk-7180.

It has been a while since I had reason to do something like this but I used zone merge like it says in the other thread. I don't remember any more than that. I don't think I ever figured out the source file thing.
