I am fairly new to scanning and will most likely be purchasing a BCD396T.

I would like to do a bit of a survey with the users of this scanner, to better educate myself.

What is it that you do not like/love about the BCD396T?

Thanks
Ed

These open-ended questions drive me nutz and brings out all the crazies with their "wish lists".

Why don't you just read the damn forum? Read the Wiki on it and make your own choice.

Agreed. If he's that lazy not to read the wealth of information already out there, he's not in the right mindset to get friendly with the BCD396T. Especially if he's new to scanning.

The one single thing I don't like about mine is the SMA antenna. I'll never understand why they thought that was such a good idea.

My dislike may be changed in the setting of the setup. Mine will not allow me to use the to go talkgroup to talkgroup. The big button on the top of the scanner only allows me to go back and forth between two talkgroups. I can, however, go group to group when I am connected to my laptop using my computer mouse. I know it will work, because I did program a friend's 396 and his works fine.

The same can be said about a couple of your posts ;)

If it wasn't for people asking questions then this forum would no longer be needed.

First of Eddar, don't let the first 2 post get to ya...It makes it easier for others when we have q's like this. A dislike thread is easier to look at than 40 other threads...
I dislike the SMA connection. The radio comes with an adapter to bnc, so it's not a big deal, but why have the SMA? Turning off groups is a pain without 2 hands. There are also some little programming peeves, but really nothing that would make me not buy it again, mostly 'Why didn't they...(do this)" sorta things..

Well you might what to start with http://www.uniden.com as they have a comparison of the features of the 2 scanners. What someone else might or might not like is kind of useless, it comes down to what you want, read, do you homework.

Take your pills.
He's kind of a new member, asking sincere questions.

Had you mentioned that there is a wiki that might have been ok but to go all hot & bothered & high allmighty ...(fill in your own blanks)

The very long charging time. Get yourself an extra set of batteries with at least 2500 MhA and a fast charger ...

Agry with the SMA connector ...

You weren't in the mindset I see to be a decent kind person & help out.
Making nasty comments about people you dont know & getting in a cheap shot...thats lazy.
What, owning a 396 is some exclusive club? Youre special? Or anyone who lowers himself to ask questions like this can never learn to cut & paste info from here to software is unworthy?
Nasty.

You're right.....Eddar, I apologies. I had just gone through this before buying a BCD396T and spent so many hours sifting this information my eyes nearly bled.

Ditto that. But do some homework, Eddar. It'll make it easier for you to ultimatly understand your scanner.

WOW!!

Wjf & Delta, sorry if I offended you with my newbie questions. That definitely was not my intent. On the flipside, thank you for apologizing...it is sincerely accepted. Thank you all for voicing your concerns in regards to this.

I am not trying to shortcut my learning curve with the BCD396T, I am just trying to cover all angles and get the most information possible. I will do my homework and I am sure there will be lots of it.

Can I delete this thread or will it just die?

Thanks
Ed

It's fine.

If it helps any, as you'll also run across in other posts, there's not much to dislike with this scanner. The BNC is typically prefered over SMA, myself included. The rubber flap covering the pc connection port is fragile...be careful installing in and out of tight scanner cases and such, and the serial cable provided often won't work with newer computers that have USB instead, adding to total unit cost when you buy an adapter or USB1 cable.

You didn't offend me in any way - and I know what it's like to be a newbie.

I just am so tired of all these "what do you like or don't like" posts. The product is what it is - live with it.

I like the 396 and recommend it. There's just a lot of people out there who keep their stupid "wish lists" going.

You do know that those "stupid wish lists" are what got us the 396 in the first place...

Fair enough, but just have one of them. Seems like every other day there is someone posting somthing about "what's next" or "what do you like/dislike".
