As amp1776 said, there are good guides.
As far as I know, there are no plug-and-play SDR USB sticks yet. You at least have to install a "player" software on your PC, because nearly all SDR sticks come without any software.
For many SDRs you also have to install a "driver", partly depending also on the PC software. But again: who uses a PC and drives a car will manage to do this with the many guides.

an AM/FM radio is so simple a two year old can use one and will operate on its own without a computer and most times have a built in antenna.

An AirSpy R2 has no driver install for Windows. Simply plug it in, run the SDR# software from airspy.com and you can tune to your heart's content. However, seems like an expensive option for FM broadcast.

Thanks all for your input. I think I will go with the Airspy R2 as it is practically plug and play and offers 8 MHz of usable spectrum.
