I live in Hagersville, Ontario Canada which is located approx. 17km from Lake Erie and 39km to Hamilton and 100 km to Toronto. I use a SDS200 connected to a powered preamp, multi-coupler, coax, discone on my roof probably 40 feet above the radio.

I get currently upper NYS, and Ohio daily, which ranges from 100km, 125km. In Ontario, Niagara Region, Halton, Kitchener Waterloo.

Why is it though I can't get Toronto Paramedic Services or Toronto Fire services that is within the same distance?

Thoughts? What's the farthest distance you regularly can listen to?

Thanks

Steve

Likely terrain. You’re looking at about 90km’s to the nearest west transmitter of Toronto, going though hills, an entire city and a lake. There’s a huge elevation change out there too once you hit Hamilton. Overall, it’s unreasonable to expect to get anything Toronto related in the 700MHz band with those conditions.

Side note, merry Christmas to you and your family.

I have a similar setup including a SDS200. I am in radio dead land where I am but I can get London and KW sites on and off. When conditions are good I can get lots of sites and systems in southern Ontario including the Michigan State 800 system and the NYS counties UHF system.

Many simulcast systems tend to be lower power and rely on the multiple sites rather than blasting a nice strong signal for us all the receive.

Good Morning. Merry Christmas and Happy Boxing Day. So, I did a little digging into what you said. First thing, Toronto Emergency Services according to RadioReference states they are using the 800 band not 700. My elevation where I am in Hagersville is 216m (700ft), and Toronto is 76.5m (251ft). I am not in the path of any hills; if anything, I am above any obstacles.

I get Halton Regional clear as a bell here at home. I also get across Lake Erie 100+km upper NY State / and Ohio emergency services on trunked bands. Appreciate what you said though. After reading what I am putting here I would be very interested in what other thoughts you have. Thanks again for replying.

I get Halton from Hagersville and it's simulcast, as well. Where are you located? Send me a pm. I would like to talk about your set up.

Got to dispute you on this point. Try monitoring South Simulcast from the CN Tower. The 800MHz freq. listed for Site 009 and Site 010 are for within the city use.

Yeah, I have to apologize I did a little bit of research and I found out that that simulcast is using the upper 700 frequency. Can you give me a call? I want to ask you some specific questions to see if I can work this out. Thanks Steve 647-230-7226
