What the heck is the FCC doing with the narrow banding switch?

I keep seeing frequencies that are non narrowband being issued to people, whether it's new or renewals , why is this? I don't think everyone is getting extensions.

According to this publication (http://transition.fcc.gov/pshs/docs...eral_Information_on_VHF-UHF_Narrowbanding.pdf) by the FCC they would no longer issue non narrow band, but they still are.

NB is not mandatory until 2013, many agencies can renew w/o going NB

Why should I waste my money now and NB, when [who knows] the FCC might delay it again or look at all the wasted money that t-Band users just went thru.

I just renewed two of my licenses and plan on making the NB changes in Oct/Nov when the Repeater get replaced and ONLY when the Repeater gets replaced.

You think it's a mess now, wait till you see all the vacant frequencies [per the FCC] when they cancel all the NON NB licenses and we still hear them operating. :twisted:

I understand it's not mandatory till 2013 but that is less than a year away. Why allow people to renew being that's the case?

I spoke with a great Technician that owns a local Two Way Radio shop. His comment was that he just does not see his customers; construction companies, a few car services and large big box stores caring about changing over. He said he cannot sell them on the expense. There attitude is "what are they gonna do". If they do go with the hard and fast date they are going to spend years bringing uninformed persons and not caring entities in line. Do they have the enforcement resources? I don't know.

Apparently you did not read the article that you posted. There is no such thing as a non narrowband frequency. Narrow banding effects the bandwidth not the frequency. The original frequencies remain with a new frequency inserted between them.

Examples of how frequencies will appear in the refarmed bands are:

* VHF (150 - 174 MHz) *
154.4000 - Existing frequency
154.4075 - New frequency
154.4150 - Existing frequency
154.4225 - New frequency
154.4300 - Existing frequency
154.4375 - New frequency
154.4450 - Existing frequency

* UHF (420 - 512 MHz) *
453.30000 - Existing frequency
453.30625 - New 6.25 kHz frequency
453.31250 - Existing low-power offset frequency
453.31875 - New 6.25 kHz frequency
453.32500 - Existing frequency

I highly recommend that you read this !

Exactly... Its not your frequency its your equipment. A lot of the VHF users around here are just upgrading to new equipment, but renewing their current frequency, that way they only have to change the actual radios themselves, the bases keep the same power supply, antenna tuned to frequency, etc... They just go with new narrowband radios.
