I'm new to the scanner business so I'm not a expert. I found out I could not get my local Police dept. and that if I wanted to listen to any other service I would have to get OPP. What scanner would you recommend that is able to do this? Also could you post a website where they give good deals on scanners.

Thanks in advance.

Welcome to RR, Andi01!

You'll need a digital scanner for the OPP...and there are a few models available depending on whether you want a portable (handheld) scanner or one that mounts in your house or car. Uniden's digital scanners work great with the OPP. Their current handheld model is the BCD396XT and will run you about $750. A similar scanner that isn't portable would be the BCD996T.

Whereabouts in Ontario are you? There aren't that many stores that sell scanners.... so buying online or on eBay will probably be your best bet.

If your new I'd suggest buying used this way you don't pay an arm and a leg if you loose interest.

I'd suggest the ones listed below, you'll have no problem tracking OPP with these.

Check here too and read up Category:Digital Scanners - The RadioReference Wiki

Also check the classifieds here I've seen a few. Radio Equipment For Sale - The RadioReference.com Forums

I have bought my last three scanners On-line/800 Number from Radioworld in Toronto. If you are anywhere near Ottawa, Hobby Communications sells the GRE models and are located at the Masson Flee Market in Gatineau.

Your link just took me to the home page, but if it is the BC246T that you are looking at then you will not be able to hear the OPP on it, it is not digital. The only OPP that you might get is if there is a Beat Repeater in your neighborhood. That is a local analog repeater that they use so their handheld radios can link to the trunk system when they are "on a beat" ie: out of range of their cars or the like. They also have Vehicle Repeaters that do the same thing for them when they are close to their cars that are analog, UHF I believe, but check the database. In either case you would need to be fairly close and would only hear very limited traffic.

On a postive note that 246 will let your listen to EMS and MTO Maintenance

Prices for the 396T should lower as the XT is out now, but the XT has some features that make me wish I waited and picked it up.
