• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Whats the deal with this base?

A curiously large base on the antenna to the right... Can someone identify/explain? Have had several other cruisers from the same department come through but none of those had this same antenna.

Its one of the "new" multiband antennas for VHF/UHF/700/800 MHz.
I don't remember offhand the original manufacturer. I'm sure somebody will post it.
There are some cheap copies of it now.

Multiband antenna. VHF, UHF, 700, 800, 900MHz.
Motorola resells it with a hefty markup. But, hey, it's better because it has a Motorola sticker on it!

Added in edit, just so the Motorola fanbois don't get their panties in a wad:
Harris rebrands Stico multiband antennas and jacks the price up also.

This is a terrible photo due to the background (and I'm guessing the "shark fin" antenna is standard Ford) but here's a shot of all of the antennae. The lightbar is a Federal Signal Valor, which is also unique to this vehicle as the rest of the department cruisers all have various Whelen bars.

The antenna on the rear looks to be the stock Ford AM/FM/Satellite/GPS antenna.

The blade antenna on the drivers side appears to be a Mobile Mark LTE/WiFi/GPS:
May be any mix of GPS, WiFi or LTE.

The blocky antenna on the passenger side is a PC Tel, similar to this one:
However, note that the antenna enclosure may be ordered with a mix of WiFi, LTE and/or GPS antennas inside. It may or may not be this specific model, but it's the right model family.
Also, this same antenna is resold by Harris for their radios that use GPS, WiFi and/or LTE.

The LMR whip in the center is the PCTel multiband, also sold by Motorola.

This. We use all 3 where I am.

As said the 2 antenna's in the first picture are from MSI and most likely came in the box with the 8500. I run one of the blocks on my truck but all others are glass mount as I didn't want 4 on my truck.

Dumb question - how well do your glass mount antennas work? I just bought a new SUV, and even though I'm firmly in the "drill, baby, drill" camp, the massive panoramic sunroof that occupies 85% of the roof dictates I must find another way. (The remaining margins of roof are mostly occupied by the sunroof drive mechanism)

They work better at higher frequencies. Less well down lower.

We had a "take home" car that one of the captains drove. It was a Chevy Malibu. For some reason they decided they didn't want a permanent antenna on it, even though it had visor lights and a visible radio in it.

They installed the Larsen KG-144 VHF glass mount antenna, cut down for 155MHz. It worked well enough for what they needed, but it's a half wave whip, so about 38 inches tall sticking off the back window. Didn't fool anyone and gave up some performance.

One would think a nice 1/4 wave on a trunk lid would be much less noticeable than that.

Exactly. Not sure what they were thinking. The vehicle just showed up one day from the upfitter without my input. Someone thought it was a good idea, or the upfitter had a glass mount antenna they wanted to get rid of.

But it wasn't intended as an under cover car, just a take home, and the radio worked well enough for the very occasional use it saw. Usually it was just the captain listening on his way in from work.

That antenna would last about 2 days on agencies I deal with, tear it right out of the roof.

Which one? The Motorola/PCTel Monstrosity? Those seem to have a very short lifespan in this area. Even PCTel has a newer version with a large spring that goes almost all the way down to the base. Our county shop has replaced a few.
I spec'd out the EMWave for our vehicles since I didn't want to have to go through that every few weeks.

Not sure what it is about Motorola, they sure do pick some crappy antennas sometimes.

Norfolk Nebraska Police/Fire/EMS and Madison County Sheriff sport the same antenna. Except for the box antenna on the left. Those antennas seems not to survive car washes real well. I've seen the top part of the antenna bent to hell or completely gone.
