I have finally decided to replace my old PRO-36 with something more modern only to find out that Radio Shack no longer carries scanners. I checked with 2 stores in 2 different towns and was told the same thing (even checked the radioshack.ca web site).

I have no clue as to what to purchase now other than it must be a portable and have trunking capabilities.

Any recommendations ?

Thank you

Only RS's in Canada do not sell scanners (or scanner accessories for that matter). Based on your name and location, I would recommend a trip south of the border. :D

Hey Highway Driver,

I just got the RS PRO-96 handheld for Christmas '03. It's able to pick up Digital radio and also trunks. I find it to be a very good scanner so far. If you have any questions drop me a line.

mail option??

www.radioshack.com sells scanners online....I don't know if they ship to Canada but it is worth a try.

Another option is www.ebay.com

There is always a slew of RS scnners for sale there. I just bought one there the other day for a great price.

The local Radioshack's here in Regina say that they have seperated and split into it's own company (a Canadian version). I suggested they change their name then to "Useless Gadget Shack", because they really have nothing to do with radios anymore.

The digital scanners fall under (basically) the same categories here as well.
So given that I probably can not get a US model here in Canada, does anyone have a recommendation for a good portable trunktracker ?

I have had a look at eBay and didn't really find anything (suppose I could have missed something however).

(accidently hit new post rather than add reply)

new scanner

The police service in your region is not only digital, but their signals are
encrypted as well, making even a digital scanner useless for the
Niagara Region Police Service(also Niagara Parks Police)
But, the OPP and other Prov. of Ontario agencies can be monitored on a digital scanner,so why not explore the possibility of mail ordering one in from the US ? Other members on this site have done this with success.

Check out the Pro-96or theBC296D
at www.radioshack.com and www.uniden.com

If you don't feel a digital scanner is necessary, then a BC245XLT would be a good choice.

Hello,RS has stopped selling scanners in the mid 1990's and any scanner accessories of any sort in my area,If you thinking of buying a scanner from the USA there is no law on buying a digital scanner,Canada customs was never told to hold any imported digital scanners,as long as you pay the duty, taxes, which should put you in the $145.00 range not including shipping, but if you buy a digital scanner in Canada ,sales are restricted to qualified customers, but after doing some checking there are loop holes in the system....Web.. of..Lie's......
But I loved the idea of having 11 V-Scanner folders on the Pro-96 it was a great plus on buying this radio over any other digital scanner and the power options are very good compared to the other's , if you live in a big city you will need the room for Edacs systems, which in my city I already need 3 V-scanner folders for just the Edacs systems and I still am not finished programming the Motorola systems, digital systems, once programmed you don't have use a computer each time to load other systems into your scanner. It's 11 scanners in one! And after owning it for around two months it is my most used scanner, and would have been one of the best scanners on the market ,if it was built to Mil Spec. The price would have been much higher, but I would have paid anthing! for a better casing.

The last Scanner I bought From Radioshack was my Pro-2037, they started giving up selling scanners in store around the summer of 2000.

ebay help

The best way to find scanners on ebay is to type in "pro-XX" into their search field. you should get about five pages of scanners and accessories.

I would try:

pro-96 for digital

or

pro-94, pro-95, pro-2053, pro-2052 for dual trunking non-digital scanners.

I am sure you will find one. I have bought one and am bidding on another currently. Since you are buying form a private person mailing to Canada should not be a hassle.

You can also from the home page just click on Consumer Electronics, Then under Radios: CB, Ham & Shortwave there is scanners. That will pull them all up.

Fair prices and very easy to deal with. They will ship USPS which takes a little longer but you won't pay outrageous brokerage fees when the package arrives.

They usually mark it as "amateur radio product" and it comes across the border duty free.

NOTE: I said duty free. You still have to pay the appropriate taxes depending on what part of Canada you are in.

I also found out Radio Shack did no longer carry scanners, I went to radioshack.com and ordered a pr95 which was also on sale at the time. $40 for duty and i was still under $200.00 I would not hesitate ordering from them again, as a matter of fact I will be ordering a 800mhz atenna shortly that every1 seems to think are great!

Cheers

You'll be happy with their 800 antenna. I bought one last July while in Pennsylvania for my BC-245XLT.
When I'm in Newcastle,Ont.(about 75km east of TO) I can pick up all the zones but theWest Zone Control Ch.' s for TPS.
Toronto EMS,Toronto Hydro 900 system, York, Durham and the 460's from WNY state come in strong. I paid $14.99 US. :D
