For years I have wanted to get my Technians license and now I'm finally going to do so. There is a club about a mile from my house that has an open house every week so I'm going to stop by there this Wednesday to get some info. My question is , are there any stores on Long Island NY that sell ham radios ? I know there are plenty of places online but I'm the type of person that likes to see and talk about things first. I also like to buy from local b&m stores when possible. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sadly, the days of the local amateur radio store have passed. The market is too small and, thanks to the Internet, everybody price shops. The big stores can negotiate better wholesale prices and have enough volume to make up for small profit margins. The small stores can't compete against the big stores, so they eventually die off.

Get in touch with your local club and ask the club members where they buy their stuff.

Just jump on the train and go to Barry Electronics in Manhattan on 35th Street! Not too far from Penn Station.

They are on 35TH street now? I had no idea the last time went there they were on Lafayette st? maybe I got that wrong...

When I wants new hammy gear, NOW and not in 4 days time I know it's not local and not what you asked for... I drive to HRO in New castle DE.(2+ hrs). I don't know how valuable your time is but I make a day out of it and I'm good.... when I can wait... then it's mail order.

If you're into firearms one good thing about going down there.. there is a Gun store about 2 miles up on the same side of the road as HRO. I was able to buy lots of ammo there and didn't have to deal with Long Island dealers and their antics.
