Any suggestions how I can get Windows 7 cheaper than retail? Legally only please. I'm wanting it for use with Boot Camp on my Macbook Pro.

Thanks

I think the "System builders" version(s) that places like Micro Center carry are somewhat cheaper; also have seen some sales at Office Depot & Max lately--Other than that, sometimes large employers have deals for employees to get it free or at a reduced price.

Good luck....

About $100 per copy from Newegg and a few other sources for the Home Premium.

^^ The packaging. No pretty box with the SB.

Watch Amazon though, they run specials sometimes.

Didn't know if there were different rules you had to go by or something.

32 or 64 bit for Boot Camp?

I have a 2.2 GHz Macbook Pro. 2 GB RAM.

Dang that sucks! I wish it was priced like Mac OS X.

Glad it's not, I'd hate to pay for service pack updates. You could always try eBay, of course you never know what you're gonna get. You could get 32 or 64 bit, 64 bit will allow you to expand beyond 4 gigs of memory if you want to.

If you are a student you can get a substantial student discount through Microsoft, and most times through your bookstore.

I don't "like" windows either. But find a scanner program that runs on Mac. ;)

Honestly scanner programs is the only reason I "need" Windows.

Why don't you get a cheap laptop or desktop or even a Thin Client running windows? Then just leave your MAC be and have a dedicated computer. From what others have posted on here most end up doing that after they have problems anyway!

A Thin Client running XP can be had for less than $50 on eBay. Get a cheap monitor and keyboard and mouse and your done.

I currently have a netbook running windows 7. I honestly would just rather have it all on one computer. I had XP running on Boot Camp but I hate XP. XP ran pretty well on Boot Camp. The reason it is gone is because my 3 year old MBP had a logic board failure. I saved all of my content from a backup but didn't want to put XP back on it.

At any rate, it looks like OEM Windows 7 for $100 is about as cheap as I can get it. Found out that OEM means you can only install it on the 1 machine and can't transfer the key to another computer later.

not just the packaging... OEM System Builders does NOT come with Tech Support from MS while retail provides 1 year of Free Tech Support

BS....

I bought a retail copy of 7 Home Premium for upgrading one computer here, tech support is still not free, its a pay per incident system now. If you have a retail copy it does put you above OEM users for email support, but live support is still not free for anyone.

And what good is talking to someone in India who is looking at a flow chart anyway?? Tech Support from Microsoft... HA.. I got ocean front property for sale if you believe that.

Oh and the OEM copy can be registered on more than one computer, and more than one time per computer, just not two at the same time, i know i have done it. I had a computer come to me that needed a rebuild, new motherboard, new processor, new video card, most of the hardware was swapped. After reinstalling it got to the activation and it wouldn't, called the 800 number for phone activation, got their new automated system, when it asked for the generated number i gave it to it, then it said activation could not be generated and sent me to a support person, told her that i put all that new hardware in and i'm reinstalling, she asked how many computers its installed on, i said one, she said ok generating that activation for you now, she read it to me, i typed it in, and i was back on the road. Took a total of like five minutes. As long as your not doing anything wrong they will activate it.

Not sure when... All i know is i installed a retail copy and about two months after doing so i got this message window after a reboot, installing updates, saying that it wasnt a genuine copy. Called Microshaft and they asked if i had a support account, i said no, they asked for some info from my retail copy, gave it to them, and they were like ok lets now setup a payment account for support, i was like what, and the guy said sir its a pay per incident for live support.

I ended up fixing the problem myself a couple days later after getting some free time to google search and read.
