Save the money and buy the software and cable and you do it. Most of the software packages have a free trial. That is best value for money and fastest return.

Ive had my scanner since February and I have had no luck in anything. The cord it came with dosent work. The scanner now says
uP Boot Ver: F1.5
uP App Ver: NONE
CPU SW Upgrade
Wait for PC/IF
If I plug the usb cord in it does not do anything.
I bought this new from Whister @walmart online.
I just want to send it in - I think this is one of the worst things I ever bought
No one I know even knows anyth8ng about this to help me. People on here have tried soooo hard to help- like I said Ive had this since Feb.

If you do send it somewhere be sure to advise them the state the radio is in as it needs more than just programming, it needs to have the FW reloaded.

STOP! Sit down and just chill for a moment. I noticed from one of your other posts that you are a newly licensed amateur radio operator. First off, congratulations on your new ticket! Unlike most consumer electronic devices, scanners and ham radio equipment require some level of knowledge beyond turning the power on and off. Both RR and YouTube provide a wealth of knowledge that'll allow you to get better acquainted with your new device. But you've got to understand that the process of learning about your new piece of equipment is in no way instantaneous and WILL require you to be more patient with yourself than previously demonstrated. So relax, collect your thoughts and embrace the learning process my friend. You can do it!

As stated by KevinC, you need to reload the firmware. Use the following link to download the updater. ☞ Don't forget this... (whistlergroup.com) Connect your cable from the USB port on your computer to the PC/IF jack on your scanner and turn on the scanner. Run the updater program you just downloaded.

I purchased my TRX-1 through Zip Scanners, had them pre-program a SD card for my area, they was fantastic. Now that I know how to do it myself with EZ Scan I purchased a couple of back up sd cards and programed my own now. EZ Scan takes some time to fully understand it. Watch a few YouTube videos on it.

Just to clarify, the OP is referring to a WS1040, which has a very different programming setup than the TRX-1. Also, it is incompatible with EZ-Scan. Instead, it would require Win500, PSREdit500, or ARC500 for programming. See this Wiki page:
