• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

    Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value.     To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

    The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

    For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Which handheld has 1680 mHz and TNC for APRS? I'm interested in tracking radiosondes that use this frequency and I'd like a transceiver that shows longitude and latitude. Thanks for your help.

If you are asking about 1680 MHz (1.68 GHz), there are no handheld radios that I know of that will tune that high.

Also, I'm not sure that weather radiosondes use APRS for encoding their data.

The do not and different model radiosondes use different decoding (and NOAA NWS uses a variety of models). Since he wants to track radiosondes: Note that the actual frequencies up there are 1676, 1678, 1680, and 1682 MHz (it is MHz not mHz...1680 mHz is 1.68 Hz as "m" means 0.001 not 1000, which is "M")). Second: note weather balloons also use frequencies in the 400-406 MHz range and ones are moving there from the higher frequencies. I see KB1GNE is in New Hampshire. The nearest releases, the nearest releases are Gray, ME and Albany, NY. they use models RS92NGP and LMS6, respectively (1680 MHz models which can actually be any of the above 1.6 MHz frequencies not just 1680 MHz). Really your only bets are to use a cheap SDR and the software available for decoding radiosondes or you will have to feed audio from another receiver to a PC with the software. The first way is definitely the better way.
I use an AirSpy for doing this here in VA but all my local launches are in the 400-406 MHz.

Thanks for your reply. We moved and we are in Ohio. The local NOAA station in Wilmington, Ohio launches radiosondes twice a day on the 1680 MHz frequencies. But they don't appear on Sondehub/ APRS for some reason.

Can you walk me through "building" an SDR and software receiver systems for the 1680 MHz (not mHz)? What exact parts do I need to buy and then how do I assemble them? I'm not as techno-savvy as many here are. Thank you.

What about the ICOM R20 or R30, or the AOR 8200? Don't these have the 1680 MHz frequency range?

They very well may. You'd have to check the specs.

I did a little Googling and found this page with info about using SDRs to decode radiosondes:

Don't forget the IC-R30 has been discontinued according to other posts in the forum. It does cover up to 3304.999 MHz
