Greetings, I'm new to the site but have a question. Sorry if this is the wrong place for the question. I just bought a whistler 1065 scanner at a yard sale, I was told it can pick up phase 1 p25 frequencies. Im confused, if the p25 channel is encrypted, can I still pick up the channel if I know the frequency numbers and encryption info? Or will it not work?

P25 Phase I can be used in a digital trunked system, and in some areas or systems, that's the format that might be used for digital, not trunked, transmissions.

You would not be able to monitor anything that is encrypted. All you'd hear is garbled nonsense.

Looking at your county, Lincoln, in the database, it appears that public safety in your county, including your city, is using NXDN. That is a different digital format. Your WS1065 cannot receive NXDN.

Edit to add:
Looking at the counties adjacent to you, I see some channels tagged as P25 conventional (not trunked). Your scanner can handle those. But I see some other agencies (in adjacent counties) that also use NXDN, and one is on DMR, which is yet another digital format.

Is their a scanner that can pick up p25 phases 1 and 2, and nxdn as well as encrypted frequencies?
No scanner, no exceptions, is able to pick up encrypted frequencies. That's illegal, Yes, some like your 1065, will let you enter the frequency, but all you'll be able to hear is garbled nonsense. No clear voice ever, if it is full time encrypted. Some agencies only encrypt certain channels ;art of the time. In the database, those that encrypt full time are tagged with a capital E. If encryption is used only part of the time, a lower case e is used instead.

The TRX-1 & TRX-2 can receive P25 Phase I & P25 Phase 2, as well as NXDN & DMR. The TRX series scanners can receive DMR & NXDN, but cannot actually for conversations on a trunked system.

Uniden P2 series scanners (996P2 & 325P2),the x36HP series (436HP & 536HP), and the SDS series (SDS100 & SDS200) can all receive P25 Phase I & Phase 2. There are paid upgrades available to enable NXDN & DMR. The Uniden paid upgrades make these scanners able to receive DMR & NXDN, as well as properly track talkgroups on DMR or NXDN trunked systems.

The TRX scanners are not good choices if dealing with simulcast sites on trunked systems. Uniden SDS series is the best available for dealing with simulcast. The x36HP scanners are not as capable on simulcast, and the P2 scanners are not as good as the x36HP. However, simulcast issues are extremely location driven. Depending on your proximity to a given site, you may have no issues at all, or not hearing anything useful. More on Simulcast in the Wiki.
