That worked (grounding the earphone jack shield side to the BNC grounded side) on older Radio Shack/GRE scanners. It would bypass a resistor in series with the earphone jack. However be careful doing this with some of the newer scanners, it might not work and might even cause a problem or even damage.

I have used a jumper wire on my PSR500 for 10 years with no issues. However, when GRE release their PSR800 a jumper wire no longer works and you need to use a amplified speaker with the head phone jack. Make sure the OHMS of the amplified speaker are within specs of the headphone jack or you will not get any amplification.

What amplification should I get? I got a Uniden Bearcat 15-watt Amplified Speaker. It has an 8 watt amplifier.

I have to turn the volume up to max for headset to even hear much. What kind should I get? I have a TRX-1.

Thanks!

It is not watts that need to be matched it is Ohm's. Per the Trx-1 user manual here is the Ohm factor -
8 Ohms Resistor Load at speaker terminal

Ok thanks. Do you have a recommendation? I'm looking for a good one for my car that I can hear well.

I have 2 Speco AES4 amplified speakers. One I use in car and one I use at home (with a AC to DC converter adapter from Battery Plus). A little pricey but they are top quality with excellent sound. You control volume with radio volume knob. Google them for best price. Dealers are all over the lot with pricing. I paid about $34 each.

I checked the one I have. It is 8ohms with the sound filter turned off. I currently have it on so I'm going to see if it gives better sound off.

thank you though. I appreciate it!

Yeah I can hear it just doesn't seem as loud as it should. I'll try turning off the filter. it says it's like 1.5ohsms when that is on and 8 when off so I'll try that.

The radio earphone jack is 8 ohm. If you are not getting more volume then you need out of a amplified speaker then most likely you have a mis match.

Yeah I have the filter turned on. The manual for my product says 8 ohm without the noise filter. I am currently waiting for some mounting materials before i listen again I will turn off the filter and see what that does. Thanks.
