White Mountain National Forest

Looking for frequencies and tones used by the WMNF crews based out of Laconia.
Ive found them on 171.525 but would like further details if available. Thanks for the help.

White Mtn. National Forest NH

I was just up in the White Mtns. this past weekend, and here's what I logged:

Laconia is the Hq but really isn't near the forest itself. There are some ranger offices scattered throughout.

The PL tones listed are used to access the various repeaters. All units monitor open squelch (CSQ). Some repeaters carry the PL and some don't so the best bet is to listen to it w/out PL.

There has been mention of 168.050 being used for "Fire Tactical" ops but I've never heard it (nor are there many forest fires there). That is coincidentally NIFC "Tac-1".

I don't mean to bum posts here, but could someone explain why each of these mountains have frequencies? Do they have repeaters and rangers on each mountain with different radio channels?

Eric - let me try to explain. WMNF is a very mountainous area. One repeater site cannot adeequately cover all areas, therefore multiple repeater sites are needed. All of the repeaters use a common input freq and a common output freq. In order to prevent multiple repeaters from activating at the same time, different PLs are used on the inputs of the various repeaters.

You have to be familiar with "repeaters" and with "PLs / CTCSS" in order to get a good handle of the WMNF radio system.

Is the Laconia office still open, John? I thought they had all moved to the central office in Campton.
