• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

seems like Nextel has been offering a "transition" radio-with-phone for some public works agencies:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...;item=5713133618&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW

biggest deal about this model is it can do 1 watt simplex!!!

from the batwing forums:

"The talk-around is set in RSS, and you set it for simplex, or half duplex, iDEN or simple FM. "

has anyone here run across one of these in their day-to-day activities?

I believe those have been around for several years. From back when Nextel was mostly business customers and didn't really cater to the personal side.

Moto-Talk as it is called is new.

I don't know about the FM mode. That may be an RSS setting that was for a feature never developed.

The mode uses spread spectrul digital at 900 MHz in the unlicensed band.

Nextel

The original Nextel ruggedized was the R370 also known as the Raven, with external thread on antenna. The radios can work on a isolated site incase of network failure, and do have some additional feature that are not common ... however there are some wild claims which so far have proven to be just that... Type II trunking and simplex operation to name a few. No one has come forward yet with where this option is in the software
( shop level) and what mode and icons are used to indicate this operation.
I have used one of the R370s for 4 years and a R750 for two years.
If someone can come up with where the programming for simplex operation is I will be happy to go to the shop and point it out to them and have them program it. The power company that uses it has never come across these options. They are a great unit...reliable, rugged and the audio is much better and the antenna does make a difference

Isolated Site Operation

The Feature is called Isolated site operation, It works With Dispatch Groups, Not Private ID's. I have not been able to find the operation in the depot rss that the dealership ownes, The feature is also built in to the I90c / I95 and the M470 Mobile.

Isolated Site is not the same as the talkaround feature that is comming out now.

I don't know what Nextel will call it, but Motorola has anouncecd it as "MotoTalk".
It is spread spectrum in the 900 MHz ISM band. It is digital unit to unit and should have range about the same as FRS/GMRS or a bit better.

I am not sure which models will have the feature, but it is now models, not the old R370 or M470
