• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Im looking into buying an XG-100p but these prices are sooo different for the same radio. They all say all band. Is there something blatantly obvious in the price but I'm missing on to why some of these are $100s of dollars cheaper.

Can someone help me understand?

Thanks.

It all depends on entitlements. Option 50 disables wideband in UHF, not many can live with that if they are buying for amateur radio. Also, Sunny Communications (Used Radios) actually goes through each radio, documents entitlements, and makes sure things are working (they are a reputable radio shop). Some also just toss it on ebay at high prices hoping someone will buy it for stupid money.

I've purchased from Sunny before. I'd go with them over some random dude on e-Bay. Even if the prices were reversed. Sunny/used-radios.com has a pretty good return policy. With e-Bay you never really know what the seller is going to do.

Some people want phase II and encryption and those are pricy options from the factory. Most 100Ps I’ve seen will not do wide and for GMRS or 70cm amateur and that can be a hassle to get these days. It’s also nice to get a newer radio and a screen shot of the hardware revision will help with that. Rev 20 is newer compared to rev 13, etc.

Or people in the know shop for the cheapest but very clean looking late model 100P with little or no options knowing someone can add them later for a small fee.

Prices are mostly about features. I wouldn't expect to pay much for one with no UHF or phase 2.
Even loaded, XG series are cheaper than Motorola APX.
