Probably a strange question. My HOA won't go for a tall antenna outside my house, so I was wondering if I could hang one sideways under the eaves where the soffit is. Would that work or not enough "open air". I have a 2-story house so it would be about 20 ft off the ground.

That would horizontally polarize your antenna with such a mounting and also make it a bit directional. Every thing you are trying to listen to is verticaly polarized and omni directional so it would greatly reduce what you can hear. You may want to look into a "Ventenna" which would fit over one of those roof vent pipes that stick out of a roof. Perhaps the HOA would not mind a antenna that looks like its part of the structure.

Many members that have to deal with a HOA put their antenna in the attic. Just another option. As fineshot stated, Its really not ideal to place it horizontally............hoser
