To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Will adding another magnet under the roof of my Pickup increase the holding strength of the mag mount and will doing so interfere with the performance or efficiency of the antenna? Any help is appreciated.

No, and no. Are you having problems with the Lil Wil staying on the roof? I've had several Wilson antennas, including that one, and never had a problem before. The only reasons I can think it might come off are: 1- if it's resting on a slightly curved part of the roof, and; 2- there was debris (ice, snow, dirt) between the magnet and the roof (always a good idea to wipe off the magnet anyway, to make sure you aren't about to grind a bunch of metal shavings and other small "shrapnel" into your paint).

As to affecting the propagation, or gain of the antenna, no. The magnet on the antenna isn't designed with anything in mind aside from holding the antenna to the roof (i.e., doesn't affect signal), and a magnet under the roof shouldn't produce any noticeable result at all. There are many more factors on your car (that you can't really control) that might, but that's not one of them.

If you want to increase your signal, upgrading to a Wilson 1000 or 5000 is the best way to do it - the coils larger and made of thicker gauge wire, which helps antenna gain and also makes it more broad-banded (keeps SWR lower across a larger portion of the band). It's all up to how much you want to spend for a slight increase in signal though. Back when we used the radios a lot for the family, and talked from the car back to the base station at the house, I needed to get out 20 miles reliably, and having good antennas (even on stock radios) did the trick. Nowadays, I mostly use mine on the freeway, and I wouldn't pay extra for the slightly better signal. Just my two cents...

Thanks for your help guys. New radio and new antenna (Christmas). Will upgrade antenna to permanent mount K40 or Wilson 1000 in a few weeks. Also, bonding work is in order. thanks again, Mech

I had a 5' firestick on a mag mount once. It held just fine until I passed an 18-wheeler in a construction zone. Having an older mag mount that broke, I used the magnet under the trunk lid.It worked great! I saw a kid trying to take it one evening and he couldn't get it off. lol So, it made a great security feature.

So you're saying it don't really make a difference in signal, if a mag mount antenna is sitting on something metallic, like a metal roof or filing cabinet, or something non metallic like a wooden deck or plastic chair?

ground plane

No, it does...the antenna still needs a metalic ground plane. What I meant to say is that the magnet itself isn't affecting the signal - it's just holding the antenna nicely on top of and perpendicular to the ground plane.
