Are you using a Prolific serial driver by any chance? Go into the Device Manager and look for a message "PL2303 DO NOT SUPPORT WINDOWS 11..." I think if you do a online search, you will find people using an older version of the driver.

I use the Radio Shack 20-546 cable and have no problems programming PR0-96 scanners using a Windows 11 computer. The PRO-96 requires the mono adapter on the end of the cable. Make sure you are plugging into the PC/IF jack on the scanner, not the headphone jack. If you have not done so, you may need to install the cable driver. With the programming cable plugged into the computer, go to the device manager and expand Ports (COM & LPT). You should see USB Serial Port (COMx) where x is the serial port number. I am using ARC96 software.

I'm using Win96 software and have used the original Radio Shack cable (with cable driver software installed). The program loads and works as always until I try to up or download to the scanner. Then I get a message "Unable to open the port Com 1.....com1 does not exist" In the device manager it shows ATEN USB to serial bridge (com 3)
I use the ARC 500 software with a Whistler 1040 scanner and it works perfectly as always. When I purchased the Win96 software, there was no ARC software on the market.
Thanks for the help

It is usually com port 3, 4, or 5. It should be the same port in ARC500 and Win96. ln the device manager, it should say USB Serial Port (COMx) where x is the port number.

Thanks for the help, it put me onto a search for com port in windows 10 & 11. If anyone is interested search for "How to assign a com port to usb windows 10/11 device manager". This will give an amateur like me easy instructions to find/add comports.

Hi,

I am brand new here and having driver and S/W issues also. I have read many closed threads on my problem already, so thought I would piggyback my problem on this thread since it is most current and it is a legacy scanner. Here is my situation:

Scanner: RS2096 (bought used, did not upgrade yet from F1.0 firmware), works, I have had limited reception.
S/W: ARC96 Ver 1.24
Cable: Whistler PCF01, equiv to RS 20-546, FTDI chipset, using mono adapter
Driver: CMD21236, installed and reports "working properly" on COM 5 (I have tried at least a half dozen driver variants)

I bought the cable from a RS Dealer in Jan 2023, does not provide a driver.
I downloaded ARC96 in Jan 2023, does not provide a driver.

ARC96 refuses to recognize or allow me to assign COM 5, even after a complete install, once I found a ^%^^%$#%$$&^$ driver to run.
ARC96 only offers to use COM 1, or pick from the driver list which it will not allow re-assignment to COM5.
I have anticipated a need for the mono adapter and have tried with and w/o, but until the port is recognized I don't think that is the blocker.
The scanner recognizes the cable and seems anxious to make a data transfer at the push of the ^ button and I long to accommodate, sigh!
It tries to download, but there seems to be no response on the receiving end in ARC96.

Thanks for reading and I appreciate any insight to my issues.
I have been spitballing with various drivers recommended here and elsewhere with no success, that seems to be the blocker.

The latest version of ARC500 has a driver installer which works with my Radio Shack cables. Go to the Scanner tab and click on Install USB driver.

Hi Bob-in-VA
Windows 11 and com ports are another change I thought was totally unnecessary. Here is what worked for me.
OPEN "DEVICE MANAGER" --------DOUBLE CLICK ON "PORTS" -----------DOUBLE CLICK ON "ATTN USB" ----------DOUBLE CLICK ON "PORT SETTINGS" ------------CLICK ON "ADVANCED (toward the bottom of the box on screen_) -----------TYPE IN "COM1"

This should set you up for using Com Port 1 with your "win 96 software and 2096 scanner"
