Hadn't used Win96 or Win97 for a couple of months and now both programs are real slow to load, about
8 to 10 minutes to load. Both load perfectly in Vista Windows "Safe" mode. All other programs and computer runs perfectly. Win96 version is 1.71 and Win97 version is 1.34

Reinstalled both programs but it didn't correct the problem.

My Win500 is the same way after I upgraded to the latest version,I have since went back to Version 1.94 I believe, and now it loads in about 4 seconds, maybe I did something wrong but it worked fine since previous upgrades.

I can't think of any obvious reason why they'd be slow to load. On my Windows XP Pro (SP3) and Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit) machines, the current versions of all three apps load in less than 2 seconds.

About the only thing I could suggest would be to see if any anti-virus software is somehow "blocking" the apps, or at least causing some strange slowdown in loading.

Don, you are correct about ant-virus causing the problem. Disabling Norton Auto Protect and Win96 and Win97 load normally and promptly. Auto Protect can then be enabled and both run perfectly as does everything else.
There must be some kind of a conflict but I have no idea what it is. This slow loading problem wasn't there with earlier versions of Win96 and Win97.
Disabling Norton Anti-virus is just a minor inconvenience and at least a work around.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for the info. I just hope this is something that can be corrected in the future.

I don't use Norton, but...

Is there any way you can tell Norton to "ignore" or "allow" a particular executable? It may be that you'd done that before - for earlier versions of the WinXX programs - but now Norton is seeing new versions of the executables for which your prior "ignore" or "allow" is not valid.

I did tell Norton to allow Win500.exe, that at least let me use the program, before that (allow) it wouldn't and put the file in the Quarantine Directory. It's still takes a long time to load, not like before the upgrades, but I can use the program.

I figured I'd re-download and unzip the files over to see if that helped. I noticed when I unziped it I get a warning on the bottom of the screen I never noticed before:

This file does not have a valid digital signature that verifies it's publisher. I never saw that before, or I never took notice of the warning.

Neither the ZIP files nor any of their contents ever had any "digital signature".

It's starting to sound like either Norton (or, possibly, Windows itself) has been updated.

Which version of Norton are you using? Anti-Virus? 360? Internet Security?

I'm using Norton Internet Security 2011, and Win500 v2.01 is loading in 3-4 seconds (Windows XP SP3) on one pc, and slightly faster on my laptop (Vista Home Premium). I have not (so far) had to tell NIS to exclude Win500 or classify as "known safe".

Norton Security Suite is what I'm using, through Comcast.

Norton Anti-Virus does have a setting "Exclude from Auto-Protect" . I added Win96.exe and Win97.exe
to this list and now everything is loading as it should and Auto-Protect is doing its job on everything else.

I've never used that option before, never thought of it.

I have the same problem. I have Norton 360 Premier on Windows 7. Downloads and extracts fine. When I try to run win500.exe, Norton SONAR deletes it as a high risk even though Insight says it is trustworthy. If I turn off autoprotect, start win500.exe, then turn autoprotect back on, everythings seems ok. I can't find how to put win500.exe on an "exclude" list. Ideas?

The win500.exe rule I made says "allow" instead of "auto" but it works. Win500 still takes about 2 min to start but at least it's not being deleted by Norton. Thanks, fmon.
