I can't get WIN97 to upload to my PRO-97. I am running VISTA and using the 20-047 usb cable. Every time I try to set the COM port I get the message "unable to open the port: another program is already using COMxx. I have tried changing com ports in the device manager and in win97 but nothing works. I have even uninstalled the driver (FTDI) and reinstalled it. The system shows that everything installed properly. I used this on my old XP system with no problems.

Any help would be appreciated.

Does anyone have any ideas? I read through most of the previos posts about this but none of the suggestions have helped.

Try this version of the WinXXCommon.DLL file:
http://www.starrsoft.com/software/winxxcommon.dll

Save the downloaded file into the same directory where you previously extracted the "Win97.ZIP" file, overwriting the DLL file that's already there.

The new DLL has a different "Serial Configuration" window. It will find all of the COM ports on your system, and will indicate any that are "already open".

If you know the COM port for the cable, and Win97 then shows that it's "already open", then that means some other program is using the port. The "usual suspects" include things like PDA "syncing" software - if configured to automatically detect devices connected to serial ports.

I finally got it to work. I left the scanner in "clone mode" and restarted the computer. Once it restarted it recognized the comm port and worked fine.

Thanks
