I have programmed my local amateur DMR repeater in to a scan list on my 1080, but it's not receiving anything. I know because I am talking on the repeater with my DMR HT and the scanner is sitting right beside me. I have set the three channels with the correct frequency, CC,TG ID and of course time slot. I also tried setting the CC, TS and TG to ANY and it made no difference. Anyone else having this problem?

Could be a variety of things -

Are you receiving other DMR activity?

How far is the repeater?

What antenna are you using?

I get varying levels of reception for one of the MARC-DMR repeaters in my area but that's because of the distance between me and the repeater (it's about 22 miles from me).

I am talking on the DMR repeater with my DMR HT and the scanner is sitting right beside me. I am also listening to multiple QSO's on the DMR HT and scanner is quiet. The repeater is about 10 miles away. Receiving everything else just fine, P25, VHF, and UHF. The next county over from me is using UHF for their county police system and the DMR repeater (UHF) is between my location and their TX site.

How about front end overload of the scanner? You are putting out 5 watts and the scanner cant handle the RF that you are giving it on the transmit frequency, therefore you are wiping out it;s ability to receive the DMR signal. Try moving the scanner away from the HT,sometimes a stupid spot like in a corner will make a difference. I have read programming the frequency as a P25 trunker will help.I am receiving DMR great here from the Manhattan NY DMR repeater.I do notice if its far away sometimes it wont lock onto a DMR signal like when the signal is below 1 bar.I have the TRX1

I have moved it away. When I said right beside me, it was a figure of speech meaning in the same room. It still won't lock on to a signal even when I was not transmitting and I could hear conversations on the HT. Oh well, I'm not going to sweat it. I will try it again maybe today when I get closer to the repeater and see if it locks on to a signal. I will try reprogramming as a trunking system.

Thanks.

OK, I reprogrammed it as a trunking system and it is working now. Strange, but OK I'll go with it. Thanks K2ool and Troymail.

Have you upgraded the software, DPS, and CPU to the latest versions?

Well, yes. That was done as soon as the DMR update was available. Everything is working, thanks.

Jon -- Very interesting. I updated to the newest firmware before my trip this weekend, so I programmed some conventional DMR objects. I am not convinced I am receiving the appropriate amount of traffic. I'm definitely going to test trunked vs conventional programming this week. Please report back if you have any additional findings.

DMR trunking setup

Is it possible you could post a screen shot of your trunking setup (I assume in EZscan SW)
I am trying to get my W1080 to listen to DMR in metro Boston area.
I have repeater info & can get all other info. just not sure of layout in EZscan SW.
This is my first Whistler scanner so a newbee on this setup.
screen shot would help very much.
thanks

EZ Scan Trunked DMR Programming

Howdy,

Both scanners that you mentioned use software that is very similar. Tips for one model will generally be applicable to the other. If I knew exactly which system you were trying to load, I could help you more (or even program it and then email it to you).

You can either program each frequency as a conventional object or do it as a trunked system. The primary advantage of doing it as a trunked system is that you can lockout talkgroups more effectively or halt on just one talkgroup. But if it's just a one (or maybe two) frequency system, it's easier to program it as a conventional object.

Check out my website to lookup DMR frequencies. If you do a Quick Import search for EZ Scan, the results page will have programming steps:

Digital Frequency Quick Import

To program it as a trunked system:

  • Under the "Advanced" menu at the top of the screen, make sure "Show Trunked Radio Systems Tab" is enabled.
  • Go to the Trunked Radio Systems Tab
  • At the top right, click new. Under type, select DMR.
  • On the bottom left, click site 001
  • On the bottom right, start adding the frequencies in the "Site Frequencies" tab. Order doesn't really matter, but I would put the busiest frequencies on the top.
  • In the middle of the screen, select the talkgroup details tab.
  • Add any talkgroups you know of.
  • Be sure to add a wildcard talkgroup, which will receive all group calls on the system.
  • You can also add a wildcard on the Radio ID Details tab if you wan to catch "private" calls.
  • Be sure the scanlist you set these to is turned on.
  • Also, note the other options I configured on the talkgroups, this is what works well for me.
