• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Something I need to do also.
First, the disassemble reassemble section in the maintenance manual is your best asset.
You will need Torx #8 and #5 to remove screws and loosen set screws. You will need a small spanner wrench (I use needle nose pliers acceptably)
for the ring nuts on the antenna, switch and knob. there is a clip to hold the PA module to the case, that pry's off easy enough.
I recall you lift the backside at the bottom and slide down til it clears the case then disconnect the front KB/display ribbon.
If your replacement has the side buttons, you can leave those.
remove the display/KB and put that into the replacement (if needed)
Reassemble in reverse order.
Make sure ribbons are well seated and locked, use care not to tear or kink them.
That is most of it, no need to over-tighten anything, just good and snug will work.
Fresh heat sink compound on the PA module and case is a good idea, then seat the clip.
I will be doing mine in a few days when I get the replacement front, so if I left anything out, I will follow up.

First time may not seem that easy, but I have done lots, so a piece of cake.

I got it online 2nd hand. The original was badly beat up and the window badly scratched.
It had the display and keyboard, so saved a little work.
Another radio here needs a board swap, so that one will take a little time.

MORE: Where I mention the clip and PA module, you can disregard that. It all comes out with the back frame.

They can be purchased new, if you want to spend several hundred dollars for one. Even used ones can be pricey.

I got a good deal on used, but it puzzles me that these are getting EOL and you can get the radios dirt cheap. Ebay is flooded with them.
Acessories is another story and just try to find a programming cable now.

They haven't been EOL'd quite yet, but many systems are replacing them with the XL series. That's why eBay is being flooded with them, from surplus auctions.

An update for the swap: OK, mine was awful stubborn getting open but I got a couple shots that may help.
After removing the 2 T8 screws it took a good rap at the bottom to loosen. Lift that until the top of the back frame separates being careful not to damage the ribbon. If you havent worked with ribbon connectors, it is easy but tricky. I tried to get closeup of that.
This shows the ribbon seated and latched with the connector. To release, slide the grey bar by the ends toward the ribbon and then the ribbon pulls out easy. Reinserting, make sure the ribbon is seated (as the black may show, then latch by sliding the gray bar toward the white connector.
If your replacement front lacks speaker/mic, and UDC ribbon, you need to transfer those. Around the lens, there is a seal you may have to transfer also. Now you are about ready to reassemble the radio in reverse order. Make sure everything is lined up and in place, keypad may take some persuading. The two bottom screws, no call to over tighten, just good and snug works. Install the antenna, battery and you are ready to go.
Cheers.
