• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Great radio but why is it $14,000? That is just ridiculous pricing.

No Clue, probably the NFC, LTE, and 5G models drive that cost. I worked for the design house that did this marvel, not for Harris, so I don't have insight to much past the mechanical decision making. I will try to answer it as best as possible.

I think the thing to remember is that this is exclusively NFPA rated. As of the last time I checked, it's still the only one; my assessment would be that they want to make money on that until they can't.

I read in another thread that Motorola was getting a sleeve for their radio, but I'm skeptical of that set up. We did an assessment on that idea and decided to go a different direction due to overheating. Maybe Motorola solved the issue, but from the analysis we did, it will get hotter and hotter in the radio and heat exfiltration will be an issue.

According to the marketing, it's built to the same type of rigors as the military tactical radios.

So why not charge "green" radio prices. ;)

If it lives up to its marketing, the durability would far surpass any of the military radios that I dealt with over my 20 years.

$14k for a portable... what a time to be alive...

I've used the xl400, it's nice. Big, but nice. You can get them for less than $14k also.

Is Harris planning on designing and producing a NEXT competitor? The XL-400 is a neat radio but have seen bugs in the XL Line with random reboots and lag on the scan lists.

A brand new HT1000 in the day was like what $8-900 compared to the 10k+ prices now? Most first responders ive chatted about their radios with couldn't care less if their radio still looked like a HT1000 with no screen and three side buttons.

Just think if you could put that 10-14k into a integrated SCBA radio like it should be. Not some brick slung underneath your turnout coat with the antenna pressed up against your body. Then they ***** about coverage like it isn't difficult enough inside structures.

People say the NEXT is absurd.
Considering that a "vanilla" NEXT radio is nearly $10k (not counting the ongoing mandatory subscription costs).. I can't wait to see what their "NFPA" radio is going to run you...

I certainly hope not... the NEXT is loaded with a bunch of cute features though. However, between the cloud-based, LTE/Wi-Fi-only programming and requiring a touchscreen to do anything beyond basic functions... it's not something I would be inclined to put in the hands of Public-Safety. I keep meaning to take my demo into the shower with me to see how responsive that touchscreen is when it's underwater.

Exactly...

CPS works just fine on the APX NEXT.

Does it? My sales rep has continuously told me that the only way to program the thing was through their "cloud". I was also told that they were "working on" a direct-connect solution but I never received an update.

Boot time on the demo NEXT I saw was 22 seconds, and yea APX CPS R27 works on programming the NEXT, your Moto sales rep is Full of Excrement! (shouldn't be surprised by that one).

and YES! the BeON LTE functions of the XL-200 package with a standard size LMR portable is awesome. The XL-400P does have LTE as an option on the features. Real nitpicky here but I cannot stand that god damned rubber POS whatever on the side of the radio that says XL-200, its so stupid looking and feels like it's gonna peel off any day now.

The "rubber" label gives the XL-200P that little added touch of pizazz, just like those little "holographic" looking stickers that they put on the XG-100P. 😉
