To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I'm trying to clone an XPR 3500 on MOTOTRBOCPS 2.0 It already has a program on it, but I need to add a different program to it with different channels. When I try to do this, it tells me "Unable to clone. Check that device is connected with a compatible programming cable. Model number must be the same and serial number must be different than archive." I know i'm using the correct cable and I just upgraded my software, so I don't know how to fix this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Help for rookies:

Model number is NOT the model of the radio - ie: XPR3500
Model number is the one starting with something more like AAH02RDC......
And the model numbers must be exactly the same.

If you're using CPS 2.0 open the radio you want to copy from. Then open another instance (leaving the first one open) and read the second radio to make sure it's connected. Then on the first radio right click on "configuration" then go to the second instance and right click on "configuration" and click paste. It will take the entire configuration from radio 1 and put it in radio 2. Then edit the radio ID and number in radio 2 as needed.

OOPS...forgot to say Then on the first radio right click on "configuration" and click copy, then go to the second instance and right click on "configuration" and click paste. It will take the entire configuration from radio 1 and put it in radio 2.

I forgot to tell you to click copy when you clicked on configuration on radio #1...sorry.

So that’s a “copy, & paste”, not a clone.

Correct, in his case, as in many times in mine, clone didn't work due to different exact model numbers or feature sets. I've had this work many times where clone didn't. If clone isn't working, it isn't working, and I was giving him an option rather than have to copy and paste every little thing especially since he said he's doing it on 2.0.

I just got some SL-7550's (honestly thanks to a tip from you) from a guy in FL and it would not clone from my SL-7550 to the ones I got from Phil. I used copy and paste the way I described above and it moved everything in one shot to the new radios I got from him. Frankly it's saved me a LOT of time and effort especially when different model numbers are involved. For instance we moved stuff from a Motorola 3550 to a 3550e, just fine with it, and also it works great on the 900 stuff between 6580's and 7580's.

Again I was not trying to fix his lack of cloning problem, I was simply trying to save him a lot of time copying and pasting each thing from one to the other. There is no fix that I'm aware of, if it will not clone.

Phil had a bag of SL7550’s at Orlando. They were literally brand new from the Depot, & factory fresh. I got one, but I cloned a few for him to use on our Florida system. But I was using legacy CPS. But I had to make sure the feature sets were the same so I could clone them. Updated the FW to 2.09 also. Over the years Phil has had some really clean radios priced right. I’ve known him for over 30 years. He recently lost his wife to cancer.

I am sorry to hear about Phil's wife. I know he's been great to deal with and that tip came from you and I appreciate it.

The problem I had was the one I already had had much newer firmware on it and was having to use 2.0 so I just did it that way. I'm saving the plug on the last one he sent me, I think it was his personal one, (or one of) and has a GREAT plug in it should I ever get down that way.

Probably one I did for him. Did it have AES in it?

I'll look next time I have it in my hands, it's on loan at the moment for a few days, but I'll check! I think it had 2.09.001 if I remember correctly for the firmware. I remember thinking I wish they all (all my 7550s) had that. :)

@N4KVE I know the other two I got from him were still on some trunking system or something from down that way, I"ll have to see what firmware they have on them at work tomorrow. Those two were the reason I couldn't "clone" from the original one I had for some time now.

OK. I took out the Disney trunking system in the 3 I did, & installed the AC4XQ ham DMR repeaters. All the radios were Disney radios. They went to the Depot for replacement, came back to Disney, & were never used again until Phil got them. Enjoy.
