• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

That's not helpful

Is it the front GCAI cable, or the rear 26 pin cable?

Were any windows updates installed, any new drivers? Any new CPS installs?

Have you tried running in admin?

Simply saying "it worked and now it doesn't" doesn't help anyone try to solve your problem

In response to your inquiry regarding your 4550, you need to get a copy of CPS 2 by Motorola. I think the other CPS that may help, CPS 1 or 116. it sounds like an update will help. I’ll assume you already know that it can only be programmed with full access via rear port?
You may have to contact Motorola Solutions online. They will likely charge you for registration of software but you’ll get plenty of functions. I have a vhf and a uhf in that radio. BTW, port drivers are not a problem? I hope this helps and write me with any questions.

MOTOTRBO (as well as APX) CPS has been free for a couple of years now.

If it was last programmed with v16 it can remained programmed with v16. Cps2 has some advantages but isn't necessary depending on what the last program version was. If the old cps meets your needs I would not recommend updating to cps2. It's way slower and clunky. Both are a free download with a free motorola account. You can absolutely program with the front port. I have two 4550's on my desk right now. If you're needing a wideband entitlement I don't think new licensing for cps 1 is available. For cps 2 it cost $5.

I have seen the front programming jack fail on 4550's. Try using a rear cable (making one yourself is a 10 minute job if you have the 26 pin rear connector already.)

If you have another 4550, you can try swapping the front housing and see if it works.
