• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Is it possible to configure the Orange button to Only sound a loud audioable tone on the speaker?
The radio will be coming along with me on many hikes. It would be extreemely beneficial if it could be done.

Thank you.

i do not know, but the audio output on a HT is not very loud. It won't be heard more than a couple hundred yards away under the best of conditions [night, still air, no significant tree/plant growth, etc.] and it will deplete the battery in short order.

It may sound like a good idea, but it isn't in practice. A whistle is a better idea and it works.

You can enable the "Emergency Search Tone" when you activate the E button but either way, it will send the emergency packet over the air. You can program it to only send 1 packet and no expect an acknowledgement but how well this would work is unknown.

The search tone is under General Settings and Alerts

Depending on the situation 100 yards could save my life. Specially if I've been yelling for help and my voice is gone.

I've enabled it on CPS 2.0 under General/ Control buttons also under General Settings/ Alerts Alerts.pngbut when I press the button... Absolutely nothing happens.

You have to enable an MDC or Digital emergency system and assign it to whatever channel you are sitting on

As a newbie, is there a place I can go for instructions? I just recently received my Motorola client #. Do they offer courses or manuals on performing the instructions you mentioned?

Not sure if it works on these newer radios, but on our old MTS2000's, we set that button to "unprogrammed" and it would emit a tone through the speaker when the button was pushed. No super loud, but something. Was handy for setting volume level if there wasn't any traffic.

'Volume Set Tone' is a thing on some radios. I don't recall if XPR is one of them. Emits a tone via speaker for the duration the button is pressed.

Yeah, XPR series is about the time I jumped our systems over to Kenwood, so I have no idea if it's a possibility.
When a non-public safety customer would ask about it, we'd say "Oh, that's the volume set tone". That was usually a good enough explanation for them.

Not sure that will work on this radio, but it's worth a shot.
thanks.

Emergency tones usually cycle between 2 notes. However, a loud continuous tone such as the "Volume Set Tone" would work, but only if the actuation wasn't momentary or dependent on the users constant application of pressure on the button.

On a prior post, I mentioned me calling out for help. Over time a person can loose their voice from yelling. A better example would be if your about to pass out due to dehydration or rattle snake bite and need to get attention. A press once to activate is preferable.

If I had the VHF model I could have one channel set to WX weather forecast. That's a continuous recording. If left playing at high volume, that might get attention. Alas, I own the UHF Motorola. Not to mention, if the location I'm in has no reception... WX channel won't work.

Thanks

I’d dump the whole idea and buy a SPOT device or something actually designed to do what you want it to do.

I own a ResQlink which I take along when going on long hikes (20 miles+).

Since the 7550e has an emergency mode that's audible through the speaker why not use it? That said, if the emergency option can only work by communicating with a base station or other mobile units, then I might as well stop pursuing that option.
