• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am preparing to install this speaker on a mobile XPR4550. The radio in question has no rear accessory shorting plug, and is not set for ignition sense. My question is, will plugging this speaker into the rear port of the radio disable the internal speaker, or will I need to short some other set of pins on the accessory connector to accomplish this. The speaker kit is new and contains a butt load of those little silver pins.

The internal speaker at high volumes is horrible, just a vibrating muffled mess and has been driving me crazy for years!

Plugging an external speaker in has no affect on the internal one. To accomplish that, you'll need to carefully dismantle the control head and physically unplug the internal speaker.

I thought that might be the case...similar to the XTL1500 and APX O2 control heads. Thanks!

I use the external speaker, & yes, the internal speaker is still working too. But I'm told it's not harmful for the radio.

I played around with this on a few different radios…
The larger speakers, as expected, gave a bit more low end.
The smaller internal speakers seemed to have better high end, again, as expected.

I tried disconnecting the internal speakers to see what the audio quality was like. Hard to tell the difference in a moving vehicle. Keeping the internal speaker hooked up did add a bit to the high end, which did make the overall sound better.

Since doing that, I just leave them as is.

The issue I have is with the base transmitter. It is routed through a weird in house intercom system, so some mics are overmodulated, and others practically no audio. Leaving the volume up for the weak mics means the overmod stuff on the internal speaker at max volume is simply distorted vibrating muffled mess. I will test with both speakers left active before making a final decision.

I dont see any front face screws...how do I access the speaker jack for the internal?

The front panel is removed using the 6686119B01 removal tool. You could probably use a flat-head screwdriver but you're liable to tear up the plastic more easily. Then it's just a matter of unplugging the speaker.
