• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If you have a XPR7550 ,do you use a aftermarket programming cable ? Which ones are good ?

one I looked at;
Amazon.com: SUNDELY® High Quality USB Programming Cable For Motorola Radios DGP4150 DP4400 APX7000 XPR6380: Car Electronics

I have a OEM PMKN4012a and it is not so good. Sometimes it will connect to the radio sometimes it don't. I may just buy a OEM "B" revision ,but I wanted to see how the aftermarket ones are performing.

Windows 7 PRO
12.1 CPS
2.50.04 FW

For $80 I would just buy a OEM cable and not have any worries.... My radios cost too much to chance them on an aftermarket cable.

I have used many of the radio programming cables sold on auction sites. I try to get the ones with serial connectors rather than USB as they seem to work more reliably.

For Motorola Trbo radios, the Kawa PMKN4012 cables have worked for me. Just use Device Manager to see which port they are trying to use, and set the for USB COM1.

That's strange. I use the "A" cable on my 7550, & 7580 & it's 100%. While mine is unmodified, there is a simple modification should the "A" cable not play nicely with the 7550.

I generally try to purchase serial cables, then use a Serial-to-USB interface to program my radios. If I cannot purchase a Serial-to-USB cable, I will purchase an FTDI USB cable. The FTDI chip in the USB cable is fantastic for Windows and Mac operating systems. The cheaper online resellers on eBay for example, do not have these chips and they will not function correctly on computers.

I would never recommend using an aftermarket programming cable when the real deal, which will NOT brick your radio, is pretty reasonably priced.

You have an expensive radio and you want to take a chance on a cheap cable that can turn it into a brick? What's wrong with that thought process?

The XPR series are natively USB so there isn't a USB Serial converter. They show up on the computer as a USB Ethernet adapter.

I only ever use a cable with XPR7550s on firmware load procedures, or on XPR7550IS models that don't have Bluetooth. Otherwise pairing via Bluetooth is often easier and runs at the same speed anyway.

I have been using a $21 cable from China with no problems on Windows 10. Works great with the XPR6550 and APX radios I've had access to.
Found it on eBay.

I ordered a SUNDELY cable for my ICOM and have had no problems with it either. It is using the Prolific 2023TA chip.

I've been very pleased with the cheaper programming cables I've used.
