• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Came across one and never used them before. Maxton data XTL usb programming cable.

I prefer OEM but since one has landed in lap I figured it would be a spare to have around but one thing I noticed is the comm port doesn't see it.

Either it's shot and junk or do those usb cables require the cable be plugged into a radio for the usb port to see it?

I already am iffy on it due to the comm port not seeing it.

I won't be back in until after the weekend to test it out to see if the usb port opens seeing the cable while it's connected to the radio so figured I'd ask to see if anyone else has used them before.

Thanks

I have a Maxton serial port cable I use for my MTS2000’s, & XTS3000’s. Has built in rib. It works perfectly. So in my experience, the Maxton cables are fine. But I do not have a solution to your problem.

When you plug yours into the pc, does it show in device manager, without the radio being hooked to the cable? Or do you have to have the usb cable hooked up to the radio in order for it to detect the usb cable?

I know some usb devices are like this just never known programming cables to be. All the oem stuff I have detects the usb cable but those are oem.

If it does and is suppose to detect the cable without the radio being on and hooked to it then it'd possible the cable is a defective one.

Edit, disregard overlooked you use a serial cable on the older series radios.

Maybe someone will chime in later who uses the usb ones. Thanks.

The cable detects and reads once hooked to the radio, and radio is powered on like the APX usb series incase anyone is wondering.
