• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a data cable for my XTL5000. Just wondering if anyone has set up to receive data.
The RJ45 plug and IP address suggest I could connect this to my router and use a browser to copy data.
The system is a P25p1 and NAS scanning of mostly fire and EMS.
Any switches or settings that need changing for data ?
Looking for someone been there--done that.

Are you trying to receive data to send to something like SDR (since you mentioned P25p1 and NAS scanning) or receiving data as in packets for amateur radio.

Back just before trunking came into being, a lot of public safety used 'MDAT' (mobile data terminal)
A separate, low power radio dedicated to data and custom terminal.
This would display call details like addresses etc. and recorded so reducing errors.
I got a look-see of our local ambulance and instead of custom terminals, they use laptops mounted to the console.
Basically showed the same sort of display and info.
NAS scanning, the radio doesn't transmit or affiliate to a site or system, it just receives unencrypted calls like a scanner. I get about everything in So. Bannock county. (60 talkgroups) (some very few encrypted calls)
I was thinking one could pipe the data part of P25 to a terminal or web browser.
Both my radios are 700/800 Mhz so no amateur. If I can find a VHF or UHF version, maybe amateur data at some future time with TX enabled.

Motorola's P25 platform - Integrated Voice & Data - supports low speed data of the sort used for unit location.

Some agencies did use Motorola's HPD overlay for laptops but today most agencies will be using aircards provided by a carrier such as Verizon or Firstnet.

In any case, the data is encrypted in both directions so there's nothing for you to monitor.

OK thanks. I didn't know what was involved with this and no documentation explains anything.
Back to my other toys.

Some rural communities are still using POCSAG pagers for EMS/FIRE, in addition to radio dispatching. Some agencies are using MDTs to display POCSAG data and it is not encrypted. I have a POCSAG data interface board connected to my scanner, that decodes data to computer and display a running log of FIRE/EMS calls. I have not tried to do this with my XTL5000. It needs unfiltered discriminator audio for the interface, and I have not been able to find a good audio source on Motorola radios.

I have no doubt some of these MDTs are still in use, hand-me-downs for volunteer fire and such.
I have considered a pager myself but don't see it doing any more than the XTL can do.
It was mentioned that a max of 4800 B/sec is what you get at these frequencies and bandwidth.
That is fast enough to do the job, but mobile data has advanced way beyond this.
No such filter or discriminator with XTL5000, it is all done in the DSP core. Any filtering is programable.
Also, being P25 you only get the data that is parsed in the core. A little improvement over T99.
Like the new APX, they can do all this with portable and bluetooth connectivity to a smartphone.
Life and death EMS has a system that goes directly to DRs at medical centers. It sends all vitals to and gets emergency treatment from. Such system in place here is up on 1.4 Ghz so is much faster and more payload.
Back in '91, Las Vegas went from Harris conventional to Motorola trunking. These vintage MDT systems were loaded into huge bins with a payloader headed for public auction, I wound up with 2 complete working systems and for the day, really cool. My notion was doing similar, but see I will need a lot newer and expensive toys.
Not abandoning the idea, just put away for a while.
