• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I have a Motorola XTL5000 with an O5 control head in dash mount configuration, and I need to convert this radio to a remote mount configuration. The kit to do this (H1804A) costs $323, but I've seen remote head cables as low as $21 (link). What do I need exactly, and what is the kit compared to the cable? Can I use the same O5 head on the radio now, or does this head only work in dash mount configuration? If I can use the same head, why can't I just take the $21 cable like I might buy an Ethernet cable to remote one of my personal ham rigs.

From memory, the kit includes a replacement front for the radio deck and a replacement back for the control head. The cable connects between these two, and you can't connect the head and deck without them. Also assorted mounts and hardware.

Is there any way I can order the replacement front and replacement back separately, to save some money on this project? We just received a donation of the cable, but it sounds like that isn't going to be enough to connect the two parts. My department doesn't really have a budget for this - that's why we're repurposing an existing radio in the first place. These things might be "interoperable" but we've lost a lot of the freedom that comes from a private, conventional radio system. Is there a part listing of everything in the H1804A? All the descriptions I've found online are vague and don't seem to list individual parts.

You'll need a Control Head Interface Board (a "CHIB") with Flex cable -- this gives you the BACK of the control head once you remove it from the radio -- and a Transceiver Interface Board (a "TIB") with Flex cable... this replaces the control head on the radio body.

For example of a TIB see:

New Motorola XTL5000 O5 O3 Remote Mount TIB PMUN1036A - eBay (item 350374243098 end time Aug-14-10 17:51:38 PDT)

(I'm not associated with this seller, just using this auction to show you a picture of what you need).

Before you actually do this, make SURE you read about the compatibility issues about various TIBs... You'll find a long discussion about converting dash mount to remote mount XTL5Ks here:

In fact, I'd recommend you spend a BUNCH of time searching and reading the Batboard... lots of good info there. Also, you can post there and ask questions... you'll get very authoritative answers.

Afternoon, Does anyone here know what is needed to turn a dash mount XTL W4 into a remote mount? Can I use the remote mount kit from a astro spectra? The head is a astro spectra so I don't see why the back of the control head covers won't fit?

Here Is what I have and am. Curious if this will work. See photo below.
