To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recently acquired an XTS 5000 and found an annoying problem. Well, I don't know if it is a problem. But whenever it receives an auidio and breaks squelch, it makes this "thunk" noise. It makes the same noise when squelch is closed.

I'm not sure if this is inherent to all Motorola radios but it's annoying the hell outta me, especially in a quiet environment. "Thunk" blah blah blah "thunk" Do I just have to live with it or can this be fixed perhaps using CPS? (though I have not found a setting I can change)

Are you sure you posted that model number correctly?

Or is this a model from a country other than the usa?

Correction... XTS 5000

My bad... It's an XTS 5000.

The sound it makes is more like a pop than a thunk, kind of sound when electric leads are shorted. Someone told me it's possibly due to a bad electrolytic capacitor on amp circuitry. Can anyone verify this before I take it to a local Motorola shop? Thanks.

I use an XTS5000 almost every day and never experienced what you describe.

Could be that a squelch alignment is needed. You may also have a high noise
level where you are using the portable and if the radio needs a squelch alignment
and is not operating correctly the squelch may not be kicking in fast enough after
loss of a signal and the noise is bursting through for a fraction of a second.

Just a shot in the dark, but let us know how it goes for you and good luck.

Thank you for your input.

I did not find any squelch alignment in Tuner. Can this only done through Motorola service center? Or can it be done using Lab?

Noise sample

Listen to the attached audio file. The actual noise is louder than this.

That is pretty weird, never heard something like that on any XTS5K I've had.

Does this happen on every freq?

Yeah, that doesn't sound right. On my XTS5000, the audio just opens up when someone talks, and just mutes when they stop. No clicks or pops heard.

XTS 5000 popping noise

Can I at least rule out software issues? I need to know this before I fork out my $.

If it is a hardware problem, could it be:
1. Bad electrolytic capacitor on audio amp
2. Bad grounding
3. Bad peaker

If it indeed is a hardware problem, I guess I have no choice but to visit a local service center.

You are correct - i must have this confused with an older tuner - perhaps for the jedi series
which i have done many times. I am not familiar with any lab software for the 5000 so i cant
help you with that.

NOTE: Did you try using a speaker mic to see if there was an improvement with the receive audio?

I think I found the possible cause. I narrowed it down to the speaker. When I connect an external mike, the problem goes away. Guess I need to replace the speaker. Or if the speaker itself is not damaged, then a capacitor connected to the speaker?

I know my MTS2000 did the same thing for whatever reason. I have yet to find a fix, but the speaker mic fixes it for now.

The XTS has a metal clip that keeps the speaker from rattling when producing audio. It is not uncommon for that clip to be missing on radios that have had a speaker replacement. Consider having a radio shop with a qualified bench tech take a look.

The XTS uses a different audio amp to drive the speaker, than the speaker mic. So the audio amp chip is bad. Common problem.

Amp chip, bad or popped speaker, flex ribbon cable bent pinched or damaged could cause the above and since you ruled it out mostly it is one of the above. Your best bet is to either continue using your shoulder mic or replace the speaker itself with the flex or buy a new or refurbished housing with the speaker and flex in it.
