• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Motorola Gurus,

I am having trouble getting an XTS 5000R to accept a VHF frequency in the 139-140ish range. Our old 5000 radios use it just fine but the 5000Rs do not want to accept the frequency, calling it invalid. I was under the impression that the two radios shared the same freq ranges. I am unable to find anything on the internet that confirms that the two radios DO or DO NOT share the same freq spreads.

Any thoughts? Thanks!

What is the 4th letter in the model #? If it's J - then it's 136 to 162MHz range, if it's K - it's 146 to 178MHz range. Your problem is probably that the XTS5000R is in the wrong range.

What Luis said above

or

you could be trying to program a newer narrow band (7.5 Khz)splinter freq into
your XTS5000R and it may have early firmware that does not support this - may
need a firmware refresh to bring it up to date.

Luis_R, I don't know where you get your info from but it's totally wrong.

FFPM571 was correct. There is only one split of VHF and it covers the whole band from 136-174Mhz.

The 4th letter on an XTS5K will always be K.

Same as the xts3k which is available in a k model only which covers the complete band.

The advice on checking the firmware version is the best advice offered so far.

A radio's age means nothing. For all we know, the original 5000's could have been kept current with firmware refreshes and the newer 5000R's might have not been refreshed lately.

The 5000 and 5000R are identical radios firmware, dsp and RF wise. The only difference is the R model is ruggedized and in a lot of cases (especially with secondhand radios), the only real difference is somebody has applied an R sticker to a regulate xts5000.

Check the firmware by powering the radios up and pushing the bottom side button 5 times. The first number beginning with Rxx.xx.xx will be your firmware.

Can you at least tell us what frequency you're trying to program in?

I can try it out on my R9 firmware xts5k (that somebody has put an R sticker on).

The Astro25 series FPP range can be modified to a certain band split different than stock - say FPP is only allowed from 420-450 in a Q split unit so you don't accidentally punch in something off limits.... although quite rare and unlikely, it could be the culprit.
