If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hey Guys & Ladies,

For the guys and ladies that has the cable..How do I install the FTDI USB to Serial DB-9 cable? I just plug the USB cable to the usb port and let it install the driver then hook the programming cable to my radio and then program my radio? Last few tries I am getting the communication error code so I am thinking its the cable. I am receiving a brand new cable tomorrow to see if that is the cause of the issue when trying to program my radio.

Typically, you need to install the drivers BEFORE you plug the cable in. Run the driver installation from disc or download first. After it completes, plug the cable in.

Okay will do. Hopefully that fixes the issue "Communication error".

Unless you are using an OEM USB cable, you still need to select the Com port.

Many people have problems using these serial/USB adaptors for programming radios. Some work, while others don’t. It boils down to what chip was used in the adaptor. The proper solution is to use a programming cable that plugs directly into the laptop. Even if this means buying a different programming cable. I purchased 2 different brand serial/USB adaptors with no luck. Purchasing the proper programming cable that did not need an adaptor meant instant success. Plenty of people on other radio forums have the same problem as you.

I second this. It was recommended back in the day by motorola to use this before the legit oem usb cable came out.

They now have a new recommendation as he IOGear adapter does not play well with Pro CPS on 64 bit machines.

Very true. It is ideal for the 32 bit systems and xts series. In event anyone ever stumbles to this thread I woudlnt even attempt it on a apx. One may ask with common sense why would someone. You'd be surprised in time with third party cables.

I purchased one of the FTDI cables from eBay and the first one I purchased when connected just to the radio was making the radio go in to the encryption keyloading mode. I notified the seller and he immediately sent out a replacement. I have been using the OEM Motorola serial cable for my old XP laptop. Now with the adapter and cable I can program with my newer Windows computer.

The APX CPS doesn't recognize serial ports. Like TRBO, it identifies radios as IP networked devices. I don't believe there is a way around it, you have to use native USB cables on the APX radios.
