To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

You can only get the firmware from Motorola and to install it you need to pay around $75.00 for the flash dongle that will allow you to load it, if they will sell it to you. The tools in CPS only allows you to tune the radio.

What band is it?

Your master site
Locate an authorized Motorola dealer near you that's familiar with top tier radios. They should be familiar with ordering "refreshes".

First post... please be gentle. :)

Sorry to dig up an old thread, but I need to upgrade the firmware on my XTS3000 to support the new(est) LCD display I just installed in it (old one was dead). I get the light on the new one, but no text. Was told that a firmware upgrade would solve this. I already have the programming cable. I just need the firmware and any documentation, website, or YouTube video on how to upgrade the firmware.

For the life of me, I can't find very much on this topic even after exhaustive Google searches or all keyword variations. Why is this firmware upgrade process such a mysterious art form? :)

You will need a SmartRib "C" version or later, a flash cable (original motorola programming cable is also a flash cable), a firmware refresh flashkey and a proper CVN file for your radio. If you don't have the smartrib you would be better off finding someone to upgrade it for you.

I need to upgrade the firmware on my XTS3000 to support the new(est) LCD display I just installed in it (old one was dead).

Or go back to where you got the display - there is a TSB that covers the firmware upgrade for free when purchasing a new display since it requires the firmware upgrade. Or if you picked the display up from a non-retail channel, consider buying another one and hawking one of them since I've seen pricing for part + install + firmware upgrade for about $10 more than just the firmware upgrade. :D

Hope this helps

Motorola FSB10047
SUBJECT: Service of XTS3000 or XTS3500 Portables - Display Driver

MODELS / SYSTEMS AFFECTED: XTS3000 and XTS3500, Model II and III radio's

ONLY using host firmware earlier than listed below.
Radio Models Firmware Version
XTS3500 R01.50.00
3.1 XTS3000 R07.23.00
Astro Digital (VSELP) R03.40.00
5.1 XTS3000 R06.22.00

Issue:
LCD module part number 5105385Y19 has become obsolete. The new part
number for the LCD module is 5185633C42.
However, this new LCD module will require firmware upgrade to provide
the appropriate drivers needed. There will be a software order form
included with each new LCD purchased.

RESOLUTION:
Procedure to identify firmware version and upgrade firmware:
1. Use RSS or CPS to read the radio. The firmware version is present
under the Radio Information tab.
Note: If an archive is used the firmware will indicate “NA”. You must
read the radio and have it still connected to view the Firmware Version
in the Radio Information tab.

Or

2. The firmware version of the radio can be identified by setting the
radio in test mode.

a. To set XTS3000 radios in the test mode, refer to “RF Test Mode” under
Chapter 4 of the Astro Digital XTS3000 Basic Service Manual
(68P81083C85-O). Follow steps 1 and 2 to identify firmware version.

b. To set XTS3500 radios in test mode, refer to “Display Radio Test
Mode” under Chapter 4 of the XTS3500 Basic Service Manual (68P81089C80).

Follow the steps to identify the firmware version.

3. If the radio has firmware version prior to the cone listed above,
then the firmware needs to be upgraded if replacing the display with
part number 5185633C42. In order to submit for this firmware upgrade you
must have your AAD Order Number and fill in the form that arrives with the
pat to obtain this upgrade.

Note: This is not to ADD options only REFRESH of drivers and Host/DSP
firmware.

My XTS3000 has firmware version R.05.52.03.......is this bad? I am wondering if there are any important firmware upgrades that offer any improvements in performance or P25 reception/audio. Is there a site which lists different firmware versions and updates?

Also, what is DSPN06.04.12. I just discovered service mode obviously. :)

Yes, big time. DSP 6 sucked and had bugs, as did 7. Host 5 doesn't support the later features that the later CPS does.

Get a firmware update done to the latest (DSP 7.71 and DSP 8) and you can then use the AGC features in the DSP and enjoy greatly improved audio.

Most MSS will charge $75-100 for a firmware refresh. It's best to find one that services those particular radios on a regular basis. Most will frown upon having to order a refresh key for a single radio.

Keep in mind, the XTS3000 is aging, and will soon be no longer supported.

XTS3000 is already an unsupported radio. Finding a dealer that will upgrade it is fading fast. Most dealers are idiots anyway when it comes to this sort of thing. You can find what you need and competent folks to do a firmware upgrade for you over on P25 Forums. They will hook you up. Just as good as MSS shop, even better. No BS. Cheers!

I found a guy named mars on P25 that has an ad, but he is in Canada. The local Bearcom said I need to "replace the unit", so I will probably contact the martian. :)

FYI:

The current and last HOST/DSP is as follows:

HOST: R07.71.02
DSP: N08.03.05

Unless it's an 800MHz. radio AND is 9600 Baud Project-25, than it's:

HOST: R06.72.00
DSP: N08.03.05

This includes what what necessary for rebanding on the 800MHz. band.

One word of caution on upgrading your XTS3000 radio to R07.71.02; it will be locked to narrowband compliance across it's entire spectrum. Therefore, I'd find someone who can update you to HOST: R07.71.00 and DSP: N08.03.05; then you'll be golden for most everything, especially if you're looking to use this for amateur radio purposes...

Finally, the latest CPS release for these radio is: R05.03.00; which will be needed if you're upgrading your firmware!

It's an 800, but I don't think anyone here uses 9600. Is the last host R07.71.02 or R07.71.07?

My understanding is that 800 is not a narrowband "band"?

Are you sure? My XTS3000 UHF [ham split] is at 7.71.06, & it still does wideband, & not locked into narrowband. To the OP. There are Americans on P25 that can also bump your FW to the latest.
