• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I recently purchased a xts5000 model II with the limited keypad, from what I have read it is capable of a 2 line 12 character display. My question is how do I go about programing the text in the second line or the bottom if you will. I am using CPS version 11 and have the channel text set to 12 but still cant seem to figure it out. Any help from the pros on here would be greatly appreciated.

If my memory serves me correctly while in the cps app double click on <Radio Configuration> then <Radio Wide> then under the <General> Tab near the bottom there should be a check box and entry for "ID Display" ( i think ), but if you have multiple zones set up and you want the zone ID in the display you must reserve 3 of these characters for the zone ID display - that would be two characters and one space (a space between the zone and chan ID). You will have to manipulate the character size to adjust for the zone characters to display. Experiment around with it a little - dont think you can harm anything by doing so but remember to save your code plug before starting so you can return to the original settings in case something goes wrong.

The second line and bottom line are reserved for the radio. You cannot program them except to add Menu items.

If your firmware is high enough, you can also add "My ID", which fills this space with anything you like so long as it is not required for PTT-ID or PTT-ID Alias. You can also add a menu item for turning My ID on (fills the line when line is idle) or off (leave the line blank when idle). Cute, if of questionable utility.
