I just purchased a Yaesu FT-1802 mobile radio which is field programmable and am having a few difficulties. I figured out how to program Rx and Tx frequencies but when I go to transmit, it gives me an "ERROR" message. I am trying to program Rx-154.379 and Tx-151.415, I believe this radio supports those frequencies. Secondly, I am wanting to use the pager function so it will recognize my fire district's CTCSS code (I think that is what it is called). If anyone knows where I could get the codes, it would really help. If anyone could shed some light upon these problems, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

It sounds like you may have programed the radio correctly. I would double check the 154.379 , as I have not seen too many with such a step before. Secondly you are getting the error because the radio is not designed to transmit on those frequencies. It is setup as a HAM radio only 144 - 148 MHz, with a wider receive range. The radio could probably be modified to transmit on the frequency but it is ILLEGAL as the radio is not accepted for Commercial use.

CTCSS codes are seperate from the pager codes. CTCSS is a tone required to transmit to allow your signal into the repeater, and possibly to filter unwanted signals on the same frequency as the repeater. If you listen to your receive frequency and set your radio to ENC/DEC on that frequency, then go into the menu where you set the CTCSS code and there you can probably scan for it. The radio would have to be receiving a signal from your department while it is scanning for the CTCSS tone. It will stop on the correct CTCSS code. It may be easier to use the RR database here to find it.

Okay, I have been in the business for a while and just got on as a volunteer where I moved to and decided to purchase a radio. Never knew there were so many laws, I will get a new radio and thanks for the information!
