Does anyone out there use a YAESU - FT-2800M or FT-1802M radio for monitoring railroads? If so how are they?
I'm looking for a mobile setup.

You do not have to have an amateur radio operator's license to buy and RX with those radios. If he's going to program RR frequencies, then the radio will not transmit there in stock condition. For a dedicated low-cost VHF RX radio, it shoots a scanner out of the water.

With that kind of advice, I almost assumed you'd have a 2x1

True you do not need a license to buy either of those radios but if your wanting them to listen only there are tons of scanners out there that are way cheaper! I don't see your callsign posted? Grog? Whatever lol

Just because something is cheaper, does not make it better. Either the 2800 or 1802 are regularly available for $120, and you won't get a scanner with the sensitivity for that.

I am not required to list my call, but rest assured I didn't get mine on April 13th of this year, it's been a long time since I got my first ticket ;)

Oh snap! Mo...I mean Grog's smack heard 'round the forum :D

You both have valid points, but I'm leaning towards the probie's point of view. If you don't have a ticket, don't own a radio that can transmit. That's what scanners are for.

Thanks for the vote of support "Stateboy" was not trying to start anything with you Grog! just trying to make a point, its just too easy to get finger happy on the PTT button when you got a radio that can, even if you don't have a license! Why are you Ashamed to display your hard earned FCC callsign just curious? Have a Merry Christmas everyone!

I have a 2800 and have used it to monitor railroads in the past.
Worked great, better than any scanner I had.

Scanners are no good for railroad monitoring. I would recommend the Yaesu mobiles, I have one myself that I use for railroad monitoring.

Well the OP was asking about using these for RR monitoring, and in stock form the 2800 & 1802 will not transmit on those frequencies. So he can hit that sweet, sexy PTT all he wants because it won't do a thing. I know a lot of the new hams think it's cool to modify their radios, maybe that's where you would get the idea to say such a thing?

I'm not ashamed to display my call, but I am also smart enough to know that my callsign will give out more info to the nutjobs on this site then I really want them to have. There are a few on here that know me, but I keep that on a need to know basis.

As far as my ticket being hard earned, come on, you passed one written test, that's all. Hell, back in the old days when my first license was granted, it was done after passing just two written tests. That wasn't hard earned, just showing up and answering a few questions that a borderline retard could answer, if you ever listen to 2 meters, well you know the type :D

P.S. I have thought of getting some 2800s when they drop in price again, having seen one next to a 1802 at some hamfests, it looks like it could take a direct hit with a shotgun and keep working. It's about 70% heatsink with a small radio hanging on the front.

I would never EVER give my call out on the internet unless in a private group where I know and trust most everybody there.

Scanners are junk for listening to most things... Even the expensive ones. Radios are way better.

My kenwood handheld picks up WAAAY more than a scanner ever dreamed of. especially on the RR bands but it does not have TX disabled... that would make the radio useless to me ;)

FIOA is great and a pain huh? I know your name, your address in Elroy WI, The fact that you have a Technician license (big surprise)...

I didnt know there was such a thing as an amatuer radio fanboy

Are we done editing the post yet? As for being a foamer... mostly an ex-foamer now. But for god's sake don't let the real foamers hear MDC1200....

Thanks for all the feedback so far! It would be just for monitoring, not talking.
I'm well aware of the consequences.
I already have a Motorola MT1000 (talk disabled).
I plan on doing the same with the radio!

brez1: I use a Yaesu FT100 in my truck, it is an HF/VHF/UHF compact rig. One of the VFOs pretty much stays locked on 160.950 NS Road channel. It does a great job on RR, and it probably doesn't have as good of a rx as the 2800 does - being VHF only. For the price, I say go for it. And get a commercial type 5/8 wave antenna and cut it to 160. You'll hear just about everything that can be heard. If I'm out walking around, I usually take the old PRO83, it is very drop-resistant and has the scratches to prove it!

If anybody is worried about the temptation to transmit, take the microphone apart and unsolder the connections to the ptt switch.

And yes, I too am a foamer. I can see tracks out of my window right now.

#1 If the radio is only used for non-ham RX (RR, public safety, etc) they there is no need to modify it not to TX as it won't in stock form.

#2 They most likely have a menu setting that also blocks the TX ability, the 2600 did (and was the predecessor to the 2800 & 1802).
