I'll second the FT-60. It was my first radio and they are built like tanks.
They are also easier to use than some of the newer one's that do everything but wash your windshield. For a new person that can be an advantage. As was said, put on a good aftermarket Diamond antenna and they are really talkers.
Great first radio though some people think getting a mobile is a better idea. Thing is, if you have decent repeaters within range, the FT-60 will work great. It's not bad on simplex for a handheld either.
You can also buy a good mobile antenna and with an adapter, use it in your vehicle and put out a better signal when mobile using a stock type antenna inside the vehicle. I've done that with mine. Usually use high power to make up for signal loss in the coax and use the cigarette adapter to keep it charged and up and transmitting.
The Comet CA-2X4SR is one of the best Mobile antennas I've used. Very wide banded so it can be used with GMRS and very good gain. The only downside is that it works best with an NMO mount and 3/8" hole drilled through the roof (I don't see it as a down side, but some do. It's a small hole and won't even get you in trouble with a leased vehicle as it's not considered "Body Damage". The radios will transmit further with this type of antenna mount and hear better also ). I don't find that a huge problem. If you ever sell the vehicle, just put a plug in the hole and paint it the color of the vehicle. You will always put out a better signal with an antenna mounted that way VS a clamp on or mag mount. Add a mobile radio later and you have a mobile that gets lot of compliments without a brick to make it sound strong.
