Can anyone help me to do this. It seems very confusing. The manual tell it one way but it seems to use different terms. A quick start I got tells to warm up the set put the meter switch into the IC POSITION WITH THE CARRIER AND MIC IN THE FULLY COUNTER-CLOCKWISE POSITION. Put switch in the MOX position and check for 60ma on the scale. What scale the front meter shows 1.5. Where do you read 60ma? Where is the scale??? How can I adjust to 60 with the BIAS control if I can't find 60ma? Can anyone help with this first part?? Thanks Ron

It's been a long time since I had a 101EE but by looking at the on line manual IC of 1.5 is 150mA. With the carrier control at zero you should read 50mA or .5 on the scale. The pictorial view of the top showing the bias adjust control is on page 21 and the adjustment described on page 23. It's a bit confusing, the top view shows VR2, VR3, and VR4 while the bottom view shows VR1. Since "bias control" is singular there is but one, my guess is VR1 because the others appear to be on a plug in board and board adjustments are specified VR number on PB number.

You have a classic and a good one so be careful not to damage the finals, the last of the TV sweep tubes are very expensive.

Thanks very much. How much do tubes cost? Thanks Ron

The 101B amplifier section uses the 6JS6C tube, actually a pair of them. All of the 101's used this tube (or its equiv) until the FT-101ZD, that one used a pair of 6146B's. I think that almost all of the later model tube final rigs used the 6146.

6JS6C's can be hard to find today, and typically bring $40 to $50 each for NOS (new, old stock) tubes, with "tested good" used tubes running $20 and up.

You can modify the FT-101B to use the 6146B tube, there are multiple descriptions of how to do this on the web and in past magazines. I believe the 6146 is still periodically made today (out of China and Russia), and so is much easier to find new. Also, the military used the 6146B in several applications, so there were a lot of 6146's made and stored, the ruggidized military version still shows up NOS every once in a while.

Since the 6146 is priced about the same as the 6JS6 conversion is pointless. Then the 101 doesn't like the 6146B so there you run into problems so when it comes to the later models using them stick with the 6146 or 6146A.

"Also, the military used the 6146B in several applications..."
Nope, that was the ruggedized (shock and vibration resistant) 6146W made by Sylvania.
