I been told my modulation is a little low on the FT65, has anyone removed the little white cover for moisture inside the Mike hole or will I become distorted, TY

That's a good question, I wonder if there's any difference between the chinese-made model and the Japanese-made model which came out later, I've had no reports of low modulation on my unit.

Personally I wouldn't remove that piece, if you get a little water in there it might be a problem. Just one man's opinion.

Unfortunately the FT-65 does not have a mic gain setting. Be sure that you are using "wide" on the transmit setting. I have had this problem with other Yaesu radios that are water resistant. They can sound muffled. I would not remove the cover. Just work the mic a little closer than you do with other radios.

Are you sure you're speaking into the mic hole? I noticed on the FT-4XR I have to angle my voice toward the lower left corner of the speaker grill. It's very obvious when testing next to another radio.

I also noticed the lack of a mic gain. Overall this is probably a good thing so distortion and over-modulation is limited.

FWIW the audio quality on the 4XR is excellent.
